We are looking for a talented and driven Junior Game Artist to join the Realityjam studio team as an apprentice, contributing directly to the visual development of MMO game, 5th Dimension. This is a fully remote, paid apprenticeship offering structured training, hands-on production experience, and a clear progression pathway within the studio.
You will work across character art, environment art, and UI assets, collaborating with technical artists, programmers, and designers to deliver high-quality, game-ready visuals that meet performance targets and serve the aesthetic vision of 5th Dimension. The apprenticeship training that supports this role is a level 6 ‘degree’ apprenticeship. Accordingly, the educational component of the role is delivered 2 days per week and constitutes a rigorous, intense vocational training pathway that requires some pre-existing knowledge and experience of technical art and CG.
The role comprises elements of technical art and 3D design (art), working with Unity and various other 3D and asset creation tools. If you’re not yet at the required experience level, our pre-apprenticeship pathway offers a direct, mentored route into this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create high-quality 2D and 3D game-ready assets including characters, environments, props, and UI elements.
- Optimize assets for real-time performance, including polygon budgets, texture atlasing, and LOD setup.
- Work within established art style guidelines to ensure visual consistency across the game.
- Rig, skin, and animate characters and 3D assets.
- Collaborate with technical artists and programmers to integrate assets cleanly into the Unity pipeline.
- Contribute to environment dressing, level composition, and world-building tasks as directed.
- Participate in art reviews, receive and action feedback constructively, and iterate on work to hit quality targets.
- Maintain organized, well-named asset libraries and contribute to pipeline documentation.
Essential Requirements:
- 2 years of commercial experience creating game-ready art assets in a commercial game development context.
- Strong proficiency in Blender and at least one other industry-standard 3D tool, e.g., Maya or 3ds Max.
- Demonstrable understanding of real-time art constraints including polycount, UV layout, texture resolution, and draw call management.
- Experience working within a structured asset pipeline and delivering to defined art style guidelines.
- A portfolio demonstrating commercial-quality 3D and/or 2D game art.
- Right to work in the United Kingdom, applicants must hold this at the time of application.
- A basic understanding of the game development pipeline including 3D, animation, lighting, rigging etc.
- Desire to learn the art of game creation and become proficient in the technical skills required to create and publish game art and 3D content in-game.
- Completion of the 5th Dimension demo on Steam prior to submitting your application.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience creating art assets specifically for Unity, including material setup, prefab configuration, and shader compatibility.
- Familiarity with Substance Painter, Substance Designer, or equivalent texture authoring tools.
- Understanding of PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflows and real-time lighting principles.
- Experience with character art including rigging-ready topology, skin weighting awareness, or facial blendshape creation.
- Background in concept art, illustration, or visual development to support style exploration.
- Experience working on multiplayer or online game titles.
