The Level 2 Adult Care Worker Apprenticeship is designed for frontline care professionals who support adults with a wide range of care and support needs. Over a minimum of 12 months, apprentices develop the practical skills, underpinning knowledge and professional behaviours needed to help individuals live as independently and safely as possible — with dignity, choice and control at the heart of everything they do. Whether your team works in residential care, domiciliary settings, supported living or day services, this apprenticeship builds a confident, compassionate and competent workforce ready to deliver outstanding person-centred care.

Adult Care Workers are the backbone of health and social care services. They work directly with people facing physical, practical, social, emotional or intellectual challenges, supporting them to achieve their personal goals and maintain the highest possible quality of life.
This Level 2 apprenticeship covers a broad spectrum of job roles, including Care Assistant, Support Worker, Personal Assistant, Key Worker, Home Care Support Worker, Mental Health Support Worker and Learning Disability Support Worker, among others.
Apprentices can be based in residential or nursing homes, in people's own homes, in day centres or in clinical healthcare settings — making it one of the most flexible and widely applicable standards in the care sector.
The programme lasts a minimum of 12 months and leads to a Level 2 Diploma in Care, with end-point assessment confirming occupational competence. Apprentices who do not already hold Level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this during the programme and sit the test for Level 2 prior to the end-point assessment. All apprentices must also meet the standards set out in the Care Certificate and complete an Enhanced DBS check before starting.
The apprenticeship is built around six core values — Care, Compassion, Courage, Communication, Competence and Commitment — known as the 6Cs. These values underpin every element of the standard and set the expectation for how Adult Care Workers carry out their roles day to day.
It's an ideal entry point into the care sector and provides a clear progression route into more senior roles, including the Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker Apprenticeship.

Whats Covered

The Level 2 Adult Care Worker standard is structured around six key themes, each containing a set of knowledge and skills requirements that apprentices must demonstrate by the end of their programme.
Tasks and Responsibilities — Apprentices learn to work within the scope of their role, understanding professional boundaries, the duty of care and how to contribute to person-centred care and support plans. They develop the ability to support individuals with cognitive, physical or sensory impairments, respond to changing needs and ensure people are informed and actively involved in decisions about their own care.
Values and Behaviours — A strong emphasis is placed on dignity, respect, empathy and person-centred practice. Apprentices must demonstrate the courage to support individuals in ways that may challenge their own personal or cultural beliefs, while always honouring the rights and preferences of the people they support.
Communication — Effective communication sits at the centre of good care. Apprentices are expected to understand barriers to communication, use preferred communication methods (including signing and communication boards), practise active listening and maintain clear, concise records while keeping confidential information secure.
Safeguarding — Apprentices learn to recognise the signs of different forms of abuse, understand national and local safeguarding strategies, respond appropriately to concerns and have the confidence to report and challenge unsafe practices through established procedures including whistleblowing.
Health and Wellbeing — This theme covers the promotion of health and safety for both the individuals being supported and colleagues. It includes infection prevention and control, safe moving and handling, fire safety, hazardous substances, first aid awareness, nutrition and hydration, and the use of risk assessments to support people safely.
Professional Development — Apprentices are expected to reflect on their own practice, actively contribute to their personal development plan, work effectively in partnership with other professionals and organisations, and build core skills in literacy, numeracy and IT. They also learn to recognise when to seek specialist knowledge and how to maintain clear professional boundaries.
Together, these KSBs ensure that apprentices finishing the programme are not just technically capable, but embody the values-driven, person-centred approach that defines high-quality adult care.
