An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head of Technical to join a client-side development organisation delivering a landmark residential scheme in Hampshire. This senior leadership role will take responsibility for the technical delivery of a major new-build development comprising approximately 400 residential units. Reporting directly to the Project Director, you will lead a team of two Technical Managers and oversee all technical, design, engineering, and consultant coordination activities throughout the development lifecycle.
The ideal candidate will come from a residential developer, housing developer, or main contractor background and possess significant experience managing the technical delivery of large-scale residential projects.
The Role
As Head of Technical, you will be responsible for leading the technical function on a flagship development, ensuring the project progresses efficiently through design, approvals, procurement support, and construction phases. You will act as the key technical lead, working closely with internal stakeholders, consultants, contractors, local authorities, and utility providers to ensure successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities as Head of Technical
- Lead and manage the technical delivery of a major residential development.
- Directly manage and mentor a team of two Technical Managers.
- Report regularly to the Project Director on programme, risks, design progress, and technical matters.
- Oversee the design process from planning approval through detailed design and construction.
- Manage external consultant teams including architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, M&E consultants, and specialist designers.
- Ensure design information is coordinated, compliant, and delivered to programme.
- Drive value engineering and buildability reviews without compromising quality.
- Manage technical approvals and statutory requirements including planning conditions, Building Regulations, utilities, highways, and environmental matters.
- Support procurement and construction teams with technical expertise throughout project delivery.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks while maintaining programme objectives.
- Ensure all technical documentation, specifications, and standards are maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
- Collaborate closely with commercial, development, and construction teams to achieve project objectives.
Requirements
- Proven experience in a senior technical leadership role within residential development or construction.
- Strong background working for a housing developer, residential developer, main contractor, or client-side organisation.
- Experience delivering large-scale residential developments.
- Demonstrable experience managing technical and design teams.
- Strong understanding of planning, Building Regulations, infrastructure, utilities, and residential construction.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple consultants and complex technical workstreams.
- Commercial awareness and understanding of programme management.
Essential Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Building Surveying, Architectural Technology, or a related discipline.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as RICS, CIOB, ICE, RIBA, CIAT, or equivalent.
- Experience working on developments of 200+ units.
- Knowledge of modern methods of construction and sustainable building practices.
- Experience within mixed-tenure residential or regeneration projects.
