Junior Medical Writer (JMW) Role Purpose

Our JMWs play a fundamental role in our business by contributing to day-to-day project delivery within an account, supporting the team to create outstanding medical content across a variety of therapy areas. This position is ideal for a proactive communicator with a passion for science, a keen eye for detail, and an interest in AI. This role is based in the UK and employed under a UK contract of employment, with contractual working hours of 40 hours per week, but works as part of teams supporting US business and clients. The role works closely with US-based colleagues and may have day-to-day line management from leaders supporting US business. As for any role in Real Chemistry, reasonable flexibility to work across US and other time zones will be required depending on business need.

Key Responsibilities

  • Scientific knowledge: Uses a range of resources to understand the science underlying assigned projects. Communicates relevant therapy area knowledge to the wider team to keep them up to date. Learns new therapeutic areas quickly and demonstrates this knowledge. Demonstrates strong analytical skills.
  • Strategic knowledge: Uses a range of resources to understand the product strategy related to assigned projects. Demonstrates awareness of brand strategic objectives in written work. Assimilates and has an appreciation of the medical affairs and commercial contexts within which clients work, with guidance. Performs research to support assigned project work (KEE mapping, collating data from resources) and reviews literature and competitive information to continually expand understanding of brand/marketplace and emerging competitors. Seeks to understand the strategic intent in their work.
  • AI: Incorporates AI tools responsibly and appropriately into their tasks with guidance from team members. Actively seeks to learn about available and new AI tools. Shares insights and learnings with peers about using AI.
  • Project ownership: Participates in the execution of established editorial deliverables, creating, maintaining and taking ownership of assigned projects. Uses therapy area knowledge to ensure communication objectives are met on assigned projects (under supervision of senior editorial team).
  • Project development: Actively participates in the briefing process for assigned work – interrogating the brief and confirming understanding. Flags with account lead(s)/line manager at the earliest stage any potential barriers to successful project completion and suggests solutions.
  • Editorial: Uses clear, concise and accurate writing style, with understanding of the typical language which should/should not be used (comparisons, unverified claims etc.). Adapts writing style to suit different audiences (e.g. primary and secondary care physicians, nurses or patients) under supervision of the senior team. Structures and writes straightforward documents (e.g., slide decks, websites, training programmes).
  • Quality control: Checks and prepares reference packs. Adheres to quality control processes, including accurate referencing, data checking and proofreading. Keen eye for detail. Accurately and efficiently adds reference tags to materials within VVPM. Understands and adheres to the ABPI code of conduct under guidance of the senior team and following training. Critically reviews and corrects their own work before passing to others.
  • On site: May go on-site in a supportive role.
  • Client liaison: Responds promptly to requests and liaises with clients with appropriate support from more senior team members.
  • Growth and new business: Understands the processes and terminology involved in new business. Actively contributes to assigned areas of proposal development and pitch activity. Undertakes and presents research to a pitch team. Facilitates team input via brainstorms as part of a pitch team.
  • Project management: Demonstrates strong organisational skills. Understands the importance of adhering to project schedules and briefs. Ensures clarity on timelines, deadlines, and the availability of key people (reviewers). Proactively clarifies the number of hours available for each assigned project and key dates in project timeline and keeps the account team apprised of status on projects by providing timely and accurate communication. Prioritises workload accordingly. Completes timesheets and expense claims accurately and on time. Understands the importance of adhering to project budgets.
  • Business and environment: Immerses themselves in the medical communications and pharma industries, clients’ companies and therapy areas. Engages with every opportunity to establish an awareness of developments, innovations and trends. Seeks opportunities to reflect these in project work and flags ideas to teams. Proactively gets involved with the agency’s non-client work, e.g. inspiration/charity/social projects, as required.
  • Self-development: Enthusiasm for learning. Asks questions and prioritises learning. Engages with every opportunity to establish an awareness of developments, innovations and trends. Seeks opportunities to reflect these in project work and flags ideas to teams. Immerses themselves in the medical communications and pharma industries, clients’ companies and therapy areas. Seeks feedback and proactively feeds back to improve individual performance. Participates in the performance review process to deliver against objectives.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills. Shares insights and experiences with peers to support their professional development. Plays a pivotal role within the writing team, always leading by example and demonstrating knowledge of good practice/industry guidelines. Recognises where they can use their skills to support colleagues in both the Writing and Account teams.

Qualifications and skills

You should bring a strong scientific background with a degree in a scientific or medical discipline (post-graduate degree preferred). A high level of academic achievement is expected. A passion for healthcare, science, medicine, and the pharmaceutical industry is essential, as well as a keen interest in AI technologies. You’ll need to be personable, articulate, and have a keen eye for detail. Previous experience communicating science is desirable.
