Role Purpose
The Technical Services and Co-ordinator is responsible for the delivery and coordination of all technical services, including sound, lighting, venue décor and production equipment, across Reading Students’ Union venues, events, and entertainments. The role ensures technical provision is safe, reliable, and consistently high quality, while also bringing creativity, energy, and vibrancy to RSU’s events, helping to deliver exceptional experiences and lasting memories for students and guests.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Technical Delivery & Event Experience
- Lead on the delivery of sound, lighting, décor and technical set‑ups for all venues, events, and entertainments
- Support club nights, live events, Freshers’ activities, conferences, and external hires
- Use creative technical solutions to enhance the look, sound, atmosphere, and impact of events
- Ensure technical requirements are planned and delivered in line with event objectives
- Equipment & Technical Resources
- Maintain oversight of all technical and production equipment
- Maintain accurate inventories and coordinate repairs, servicing, and replacements
- Support planning for future technical investment
- Partnership Working
- Work closely with the Events and Partnerships Manager and Trading Operations
- Collaborate with Venue Managers to ensure venues are technically prepared and deliver exceptional events.
- Liaise with external suppliers, artists, promoters, and contractors
- Provide technical guidance to internal teams and student groups
- Working closely with the Estates Manager to support venue upkeep and room set ups
- People & Student Staff
- Line‑manage and support technical and crew student staff, including recruitment, training, rotas, and development
- Foster an inclusive, professional technical team culture
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with health & safety, licensing, and RSU policies
- Promote safe systems of work and best practice
Person Specification – Technical Services Co-ordinator
Essential
- Experience delivering sound, lighting, and or technical production for large scale events.
- Experience setting up and maintaining technical equipment to a high standard
- Experience supervising or supporting staff or student teams
- Understanding of health & safety and compliance for technical equipment.
- Strong organisational skills
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
Desirable
- Experience in delivery of students’ unions, venues, or events
- Experience supporting large-scale events, festivals or relevant technical qualifications
- Experience working with external promoters or production suppliers
- IOSH / NEBOSH / SIA / First Aid qualifications
