Elementary Music Educator: Inspire Young Musicians in Reading

Position Goal: To develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.

Essential Functions:

• Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations, including instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to students using the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
• Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
• Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time to prepare, rehearse, and instruct within allotted time.
• Provides individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each student’s needs.
• Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, appropriate for ages and skill levels.
• Controls storage and use of school‑owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
• Evaluates each student’s musical growth and performance, assessing individual contribution to the group.
• Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for school and community.
• Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
• Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
• Identifies student needs and cooperates with other staff members to assess and help students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
• Cooperates with school administration to provide musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
• Supervises students in out‑of‑classroom activities as assigned.
• Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
• Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
• Maintains professional competence through in‑service education and self‑selected professional growth activities related to music.
• Participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop evaluation methods in conformance with district guidelines.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Qualification Requirements:

• Education and Experience: Possession of appropriate degree.
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Pennsylvania Instructional Teaching Certificate.

Language Skills:

• Speak clearly and distinctly.
• Write routine reports and correspondence.
• Speak effectively with employees, students, and parents.

Mathematical Skills:

• Apply basic arithmetic calculations.
• Add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units using whole numbers, fractions, decimals.
• Compute rate, ratio, percent; draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions in practical situations.
• Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

• Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions.
• Interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

Other Skills and Abilities:

• Coordinate activities with related and specialist staff.
• Develop and maintain required records and reports.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents, and community.
• Good knowledge of procedures, practices, materials, and equipment required to provide appropriate learning experiences for assigned students.
• Work as a member of a team.
• Courteous and able to deal effectively with people.
• Cooperative, congenial, service‑oriented.

• Operate a personal computer and software.
• Travel to more than one work location in a day if assigned to an itinerant position.

Physical Demands:

• Requires walking, talking, hearing; standing and sitting frequently; using hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
• Some driving and light lifting up to 25 pounds.
• Requires close, distance, and depth vision.
• Must meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

Work Environment:

• Noise level usually quiet but may be moderate to loud at times.
• Interaction with parents, public, and staff during and after normal workday.
• Requires meeting multiple demands and exhibiting good human‑relation skills including courtesy, tact, and patience.

Evaluation:

• Supervised and evaluated by the Building Principal on a regular basis.
• Employee responsible for informing the district administrator of any reasonable accommodations required.
