Reports To: Classroom Teacher, Building Administrators

Position Goal: To be a team member that supports students in learning the skills taught by the classroom teacher.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Reviews instructional plans with the classroom teacher in order to implement daily instruction.
  • Assists in planning and arranging a physical classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Assists in making teaching materials as needed by the teacher.
  • Assists children during learning and planned activity time as new materials are introduced.
  • Assists children with life skills, including but not limited to: toileting needs, cleaning up, taking turns, following simple directions, following safety rules, understanding safe versus unsafe behaviour.
  • Supports students who exhibit behaviours by providing consistent structure, de-escalation strategies, modelling appropriate behaviours, collecting data, and consistent structure.
  • Under the supervision of classroom teacher, works with small groups of students or individuals to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
  • Assists in supervising field trips, walking tours and bus trips.
  • Participates in parental conferences.
  • Conveys a positive, professional attitude toward learning.
  • Ability to work effectively with students.
  • Communicates effectively with parents.
  • Takes direction from classroom teachers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Hold an Associate's Degree or higher or have earned at least 48 college-level credits.
  • Or hold a High School diploma and be able to take and pass a local assessment that measures their knowledge and ability to assist in the instruction of Reading, Mathematics and Writing.
  • Experience working with elementary children.
  • Spanish-speaking preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to read, write and do simple computations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritising tasks.
  • Ability to work under supervision and make appropriate work-related decisions.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Must be courteous and able to deal effectively with people.
  • Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented.
