Reports To: Building Principal

Position Goal: To assist the Principal with activities to engage parents in the educational process of their children.

Essential Functions:

  • Help the school develop a family-friendly school climate.
  • Develop programs and activities designed to engage families in improving student achievement.
  • Help teachers and other staff members develop strong partnerships with families and enhance communication between parents and families and the school staff.
  • Develop and implement effective family involvement strategies and activities to empower students and their families.
  • Take part in opportunities for professional development.
  • Participate in and support school and district activities and programs for families.
  • Help to recruit community partners to become part of the school and district's family involvement program.
  • Make home visits and telephone calls to parents as deemed necessary by building administrator.
  • Perform other parent involvement activities as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Knowledge of parenting goals.
  • Understanding of socioeconomic class and cultural backgrounds of families and how to interpret culture of school to them.
  • Ability to think and act in ways that respect ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity.
  • Knowledge and experience as an assistant or other voluntary experience in school building.
  • Bilingual – English/Spanish required.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal direction.
  • Ability to read, write and do simple computations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks.
  • Ability to work under supervision and make appropriate work-related decisions.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Must be courteous and able to deal effectively with people.
  • Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented.
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to organize classroom setting to efficiently accomplish tasks.
  • Basic typing of form letters.

Physical Demands: Regularly required to sit at a desk/table for limited periods of time. Stand for limited/extended periods of time. Frequently required to bend, stoop, twist, lift, reach and grasp.

Work Environment: Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Terms of Employment: As per terms and conditions set forth in the contract between the School District of Reading and the Reading Educational Support Personnel Association.
