Position Summary
Performs routine transport and receiving work, using a refrigerated truck to move prepared meals, supplies, and materials to and from district schools. This position plays a critical role in the success of the Food & Nutrition Services program by maintaining the integrity of the cold chain during delivery, executing accurate inventory control, and providing professional interactions with school staff and students. This role also performs storage, stock rotation, and sanitation tasks in compliance with food safety guidelines.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Delivery & Transport
- Operate a district-owned delivery truck daily to deliver food, milk, grocery items, and supplies to all 8 schools within the district.
- Load, organize, and secure food items and materials in the truck according to temperature requirements and safety standards.
- Maintain food safety protocols during transit, including proper temperature control of perishable items.
- Distribute items at schools efficiently and professionally, ensuring timely delivery.
- Pick up and deliver interoffice envelopes and documents from schools and transport them to the central high school office.
- Pick up and deliver daily bank deposits and maintain secure control of banking supplies as needed.
- Maintains general cleanliness of the delivery vehicle and stays observant of its condition. Monitors fuel levels and basic operating functions such as tires, lights, brakes, and fluids, reporting any issues or abnormalities to the Food Service Director and the DPW. Routine inspections and maintenance are managed by the Department of Public Works. Keeps trucks filled with gasoline. Cleans interior of truck.
Receiving & Inventory Management
- Receive and inspect incoming vendor deliveries (dry, refrigerated, and frozen) for accuracy, quality, and food safety compliance.
- Count, sort, and weigh incoming items to verify quantity and condition against invoices and delivery slips.
- Store food and supplies according to inventory management best practices, including FIFO (First In, First Out).
- Maintain clean and organized dry, refrigerated, and freezer storage areas, taking into account temperature, weight limits, and food safety regulations.
- Accurately complete stock records and delivery logs, and report inventory shortages, overages, or discrepancies.
Sanitation & Maintenance
- Assist with regular cleaning and sanitizing of the central kitchen and storage areas, including floors, restrooms, storerooms, equipment, and surfaces.
- Empty waste and transport trash to designated disposal areas.
- Ensure truck cleanliness (interior and exterior), perform pre-trip inspections, and report any maintenance concerns to the Food Service Director and DPW Mechanic.
- Maintain proper levels of fuel and perform basic vehicle upkeep.
Professional Interaction
- Represent the Food & Nutrition Services team in a respectful and professional manner at all school sites.
- Communicate effectively with cafeteria staff, custodians, and administrative personnel.
- Maintain appropriate and respectful conduct around students and other members of the school community.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Strong attention to detail in verifying deliveries, inventory tracking, and completing paperwork.
- Knowledge of proper food storage, sanitation, and safety practices (HACCP/FIFO).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, perform physical labor, and work on your feet for extended periods.
- Demonstrated reliability, independence, and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work in varied environments including refrigerated spaces, kitchens, and loading docks.
- Ability to operate with professionalism in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to walk and stand for a long period of time.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in delivery, food service, warehouse, or related fields preferred.
- Licensing: Valid driver\βs license with a clean driving record; CDL not required but a plus.
Must pass a Fingerprinting, CORI background check and physical screening in accordance with district policy.
Physical Demands
- Frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, standing, walking, and loading/unloading.
- Regular use of hands to handle items and use hand trucks and other equipment.
- Visual ability to read invoices, monitor temperature logs, and input data.
- Ability to work in varied environments including hot kitchens, walk-in coolers/freezers, and outdoor loading zones.
Work Environment
- Exposure to extreme temperatures (cold storage/freezers or warm kitchens).
- Occasional work on slippery surfaces or with potential hazards such as carts and boxes.
- Moderate to loud noise level typical of kitchen and delivery settings.
- Interaction with children, staff, and the public in a school-based environment.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Food Service Director or designee based on the effectiveness, accuracy, professionalism, and reliability in fulfilling the duties outlined above.
