23 Months Apprenticeship. This is an excellent opportunity to begin a career in housing services while gaining a recognised qualification. As an Applications Officer Apprentice, you’ll work within our Voids and Lettings Team to support the effective management of Reading Borough Council’s Housing Register. You’ll gain hands-on experience, develop essential administrative and customer service skills, and play an important role in helping residents access housing advice and support. You’ll be fully supported throughout your apprenticeship, completing the Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship Standard alongside your day to day responsibilities.

About the role
You’ll help ensure that all applications on the Housing Register are accurate, up to date and assessed in line with legislation and Council policy. Working closely with colleagues, applicants and partner agencies, you’ll build a strong understanding of housing needs and processes.
- Supporting the management and maintenance of the Housing Register, including assessing an applicant’s housing need
- Re-registering, reinstating and cancelling applications where appropriate
- Spot checking application forms and helping maintain an efficient filing system
- Acknowledging applications in writing and advising applicants of their priority banding
- Assisting applicants who need help completing housing register forms
- Carrying out eligibility checks and liaising with statutory and non-statutory agencies
- Interviewing applicants to gather additional information when required
- Providing administrative support to the medical assessment process
- Responding to correspondence and inbox enquiries, offering basic housing options advice
- Reviewing and updating standard letters, forms and information leaflets
- Supporting the identification and investigation of potential fraudulent applications
In this role you’ll also have the opportunity to rotate through different tasks, helping you develop a well-rounded understanding of the service.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is motivated, organised and eager to learn. This role is ideal for someone starting their career or looking for a structured pathway into housing, administration or customer service. The ideal candidate will bring:
- A commitment to providing excellent customer service and working within customer care standards
- Good organisational skills and the ability to work accurately under pressure
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Basic IT skills with at least 6 months’ experience using technology and systems
- The ability to interpret information, keep accurate records and follow procedures
- A proactive approach, able to act on your own initiative
