Overview

Are you a skilled Painter and Decorator with a passion for quality workmanship and customer care? Reading Borough Council is seeking a dedicated Multi Skilled Painter and Decorator to join our Repairs and Maintenance Service team. This is your chance to make a real difference in the community by improving homes and communal spaces across Reading.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality painting and decorating services across a variety of council-owned properties, including houses, flats, maisonettes, and communal areas.
  • Prepare surfaces, apply specialist coatings and finishes, hang wallpaper, and carry out damp and mould remedial treatments.
  • Work on planned programmes or one-off jobs, follow the schedule of rates, and contribute to the Council\”s Pay and Productivity scheme.
  • Assess material needs, manage tools efficiently, and ensure all work is completed safely, tidily, and in line with health and safety regulations.
  • Since most work takes place in occupied homes, treat tenants with courtesy and respect, maintaining a professional and considerate approach at all times.
  • Complete service sheets and time logs promptly, identify any additional work required, and communicate clearly with supervisors.
  • Be proactive, demonstrate strong customer care, and be able to work independently or as part of a team to deliver excellent outcomes for Reading residents.
  • Be supplied with a company vehicle, specialist tools, mobile phone/PDA, and all other items necessary to perform to a high standard.
  • Manage your own van stock and materials, work methodically, and allow time to order and collect materials/parts.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills in sometimes difficult circumstances.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Full valid manual driving licence.
  • Ideally a minimum of a full trade apprenticeship or hold a City and Guilds or NVQ Level 2 qualification in Painting, plus other basic skills, with demonstrable experience in the construction industry.
  • Experience of workplace health and safety.
  • Asbestos awareness training would be advantageous.
  • Experience of working within the Social Housing sector (ideally).
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of working with handheld technology is beneficial.
