The Role
As a Wood Finishes Sprayer, you will be responsible for the professional preparation and spray application of primers, paints, lacquers, and stains to wood, MDF, and veneered components. This role requires a high level of attention to detail to achieve defect-free finishes, from matte through to high gloss, while maintaining spray equipment and working in line with strict health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Surface Preparation: Sanding, cleaning, and repairing wood surfaces using fillers to remove imperfections prior to coating.
- Spray Application: Operating airless, air-assisted, or HVLP spray equipment to apply consistent layers of finishes, including varnish, shellac, water-based, and polyurethane paints.
- Colour Matching: Mixing and matching stains or paints to meet specific customer requirements or project designs.
- Quality Control: Inspecting finished pieces for defects such as drips, orange peel, or streaks, and carrying out touch-ups or de-nibbing between coats.
- Equipment Maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining spray guns, spray booths, and ventilation systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Safety Compliance: Adhering to COSHH regulations and wearing appropriate PPE, including respirators and goggles.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of wood finishing techniques, coating systems, and drying times.
- Manual Dexterity: Excellent hand-eye coordination for precise spray application and manual sanding.
- Experience: Previous experience in furniture or joinery spraying is preferred; transferable skills from vehicle spray painting are highly valued.
- Attention to Detail: A strong eye for identifying subtle defects in grain fill, sheen levels, and colour consistency.
- Education: Vocational qualifications such as NVQ or City & Guilds in Furniture Finishing or Woodworking are advantageous but not essential.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Based in a well-ventilated spray booth and workshop environment.
- Physical Demands: Standing for extended periods and lifting heavy furniture components (up to approximately 25kg).
- Exposure: Regular exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals, requiring consistent use of safety equipment.
