We're building a high-impact payments platform for a top-tier investment bank – think real-time, high-volume transactions, sub-10ms latency, and millions of operations per second. This isn't a CRUD role. This is core Java engineering, building and optimising systems that sit at the heart of global payments infrastructure. You'll join a small, senior team with real ownership – you'll own services end-to-end, from design to production support. Your work will power real-time payments across the globe.
What You'll Be Doing
- Design, build, and optimise high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems using Java 21+, Spring Boot, Kafka, and Kubernetes.
- Work with event-driven architectures and asynchronous messaging.
- Tune JVM performance, debug production issues, and optimise for reliability.
- Own the full lifecycle: requirements, design, implementation, testing, and production support.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, and business stakeholders in an Agile environment.
What We're Looking For
Must-Have:
- 8+ years of hands-on Java development experience.
- Expert knowledge of Java 17/21, Spring Boot, and modern JVM features.
- Deep understanding of concurrency, multithreading, and performance tuning.
- Experience with Kafka (or similar messaging systems) and event-driven architectures.
- Strong grasp of distributed systems – fault tolerance, idempotency, resilience.
- Production debugging skills – thread dumps, heap analysis, profiling tools.
- UK or US work authorisation (we cannot sponsor visas).
Nice to Have:
- Experience in payments, trading, or financial services – especially low-latency systems.
- Experience with reactive programming (Spring WebFlux, Akka).
- Familiarity with ISO 20022, SWIFT, or FIX standards.
- Cloud-native experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) with Kubernetes.
