More detail about the role: An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and compassionate individual with previous experience in rehabilitation and exercise provision to join our dedicated Pulmonary Rehabilitation Physiotherapy team at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This post is based across Exeter, Mid and East Devon. We are particularly keen to hear from applicants who have previously worked as a Rehabilitation Support Worker, Exercise Instructor, or in a similar role involving structured exercise delivery and rehabilitation of patients with long‑term conditions.

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is passionate about pursuing excellence across all areas of care. We are a welcoming and inclusive Trust that values difference, supports professional growth and development, and is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the UK.

This role involves delivering a range of therapeutic interventions, supervised exercise sessions and class‑based pulmonary rehabilitation programmes for patients with chronic respiratory conditions. A strong understanding of exercise provision, progression and adaptation for individuals with physical limitations is essential. The post‑holder will work closely with patients, their families and carers to support safe, effective and person‑centred rehabilitation.

You will be expected to recognise and support the physical limitations and functional problems associated with long‑term respiratory disease, contributing to early assessment and ongoing rehabilitation under the direction of qualified therapists. The role requires the confidence and competence to work with patients who may be breathless, deconditioned, or anxious about exercise, and to support them to engage safely and effectively in activity to improve symptom control and quality of life.

Strong communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships with the multidisciplinary team across acute and community settings are essential. The caseload will consist of patients with chronic and long‑term respiratory conditions who are actively participating in exercise‑based rehabilitation. Due to the level of responsibility and clinical experience required, this post is not a developmental role and is not suitable for a Band 2 Clinical Support Worker. Applicants should be able to demonstrate relevant previous experience in rehabilitation settings and supervised exercise delivery.

Working Pattern: 22.5 hours per week. Mon, Tues and Wednesday 08:15-16:30 (flexibility on working days may be requested with adequate notice).

As an inclusive employer, the Royal Devon values diversity and is committed to creating a culture of inclusivity where everyone can be themselves and reach their full potential. We believe in fostering a sense of belonging and actively encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. We recognise the advantages of having a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve.

Benefits: You will benefit from access to our own comprehensive occupational health services, including counselling, onsite wellbeing activities and groups. These might include funding for a care certificate, a degree or leadership qualifications, or days off to study, engage in CPD or rotational placements to help you hone your skills. Wherever you are heading in the NHS, we will help you get there. Salary is not the only financial benefit. You will have access to an extensive range of staff discounts on shopping, fitness and leisure options and you can spread the cost of technology and home appliance purchases from major retailers. You will also have access to other benefits including:

  • National discount services such as the Blue Light Card and Health Service Discounts.
  • Salary sacrifice options including our OFSTED rated outstanding nursery onsite at Exeter.
  • Car lease schemes.
  • The NHS Pension scheme (one of the most generous and comprehensive in the UK).
  • Cycle to work scheme.

These are just a few of the benefits available – if the role is something you are interested in, we would love to hear from you.
