Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented R&D Cost Consultant & Tax Specialist to support the preparation, review, and defence of R&D tax relief claims. This role combines strong financial analysis with a deep understanding of UK R&D tax legislation, ensuring claims are both maximised and fully compliant with HMRC requirements. You will work closely with technical specialists, finance teams, and clients to identify qualifying activities and accurately calculate eligible expenditure, while supporting enquiries and compliance checks.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse client financial data to identify qualifying R&D expenditure
- Prepare robust costings aligned with HMRC guidelines
- Review existing claims for accuracy, risk, and optimisation opportunities
- Ensure all claims meet compliance standards and are fully auditable
Technical & Financial Analysis
- Interpret complex financial records including payroll, subcontractor costs, and consumables
- Work alongside technical consultants to align costings with qualifying activities
- Apply SME and RDEC scheme rules accurately
Compliance & Risk Management
- Conduct internal compliance reviews and peer audits of submitted claims
- Identify and mitigate potential risks within claims
- Ensure documentation meets HMRC enquiry standards
HMRC Enquiries & Defence
- Support responses to HMRC compliance checks and enquiries
- Prepare detailed justifications for submitted costs
- Liaise with clients and internal stakeholders during investigations
Client Engagement
- Work directly with clients’ finance teams to gather required data
- Explain R&D tax principles in a clear and professional manner
- Provide guidance on improving record-keeping for future claims
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
- Strong knowledge of UK R&D Tax Relief (SME & RDEC & ERIS schemes)
- Proven experience preparing or reviewing R&D tax claims
- Excellent understanding of financial data and cost analysis
