Job Description
What is the opportunity?
You'\'ll drive a technical overhaul—moving the BI team from Power BI to custom apps built on Databricks. Your mission? Build slick, user-focused applications that actually get used, whilst setting the technical direction and mentoring engineers to level up their skills.
This is a technical leadership role reporting to the Director of Business Intelligence. You won't manage people directly, but you'll mentor engineers, set technical standards, and own the quality bar for all user-facing applications.
You're a strong front-end engineer with full-stack capability—someone who can take applications from concept to production and ensure they work beautifully for end users. While you'll handle the full stack, your primary focus is the user-facing layer. The Data Science team owns the model-serving and back-end infrastructure; you'll consume those services reliably and translate them into compelling, accessible experiences.
This is a permanent, full-time role requiring 4 days in the office at our London location.
What will you do?
- Build and ship production apps using Databricks Apps as the primary platform, with freedom to explore other frameworks if they genuinely fit the job better
- Translate messy business requirements into clean, intuitive interfaces—understand what users actually need, then iterate based on real feedback and usage patterns
- Own the full application lifecycle, taking apps from proof of concept through to production with robust testing, documentation, and deployment practices
- Integrate reliably with APIs and data services owned by the Data Science team (REST, GraphQL, MCP); provide structured feedback on what works and what doesn't
- Create compelling data visualisations and interactive analytics that feel modern and engaging—moving beyond traditional BI dashboards
- Keep applications fast, maintainable, and built to scale through smart state management, efficient data handling, and solid performance practices
- Set technical standards and best practices by defining coding standards, testing approaches, documentation, and architectural patterns the team follows
- Mentor engineers through hands- on collaboration to develop application development skills and build a culture of continuous improvement
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- Degree-level qualification in computer science, software engineering, or related field. Alternatively, extensive professional software engineering experience with strong emphasis on front-end and full-stack application development will be considered.
- Demonstrable experience designing, building, and shipping production-grade applications using at least one modern front-end framework (React, Vue, or Angular)
- Solid back-end capability to consume well-designed APIs and integrate with data services—comfortable working with REST and GraphQL APIs, understanding authentication patterns, and handling versioning
- Proven experience with Databricks Apps or equivalent application deployment platforms
- Strong proficiency in DevOps practices including Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release management (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or similar)
- Demonstrated ability collaborating effectively across teams with data scientists, ML engineers, data engineers, and business stakeholders
Nice-to-have
- Experience across multiple front-end frameworks with the ability to evaluate trade-offs
- Background with Power BI, Tableau, or similar BI platforms
- SQL expertise and strong data literacy, plus experience mentoring junior colleagues
