What is the opportunity? In your role as a Director & Managing Counsel, Europe Global Markets, you will provide strategic support to business and functional colleagues on a broad range of legal matters arising from the European Global Markets business including local support for the Bank's central funding and treasury services desks on securities finance transactions and related activity, as well as commodity financing. Reporting directly to the Head of Europe Law Group for Capital Markets, you will advise on complex legal, regulatory, transactional, structuring and reputational issues impacting RBC Global Markets. You will also provide legal services and advice to the other Capital Markets businesses in Europe, as may be required from time to time, to enhance Law Group support regionally. This role requires 4 days in the office.

What will you do?

  • Deliver sound, creative and practical legal advice, demonstrating expert legal knowledge and delivering exceptional support to your front office and functional partners on matters relating to securities lending, securities repurchase and reverse repurchase agreements, internal funding structures and related derivatives transactions and commodity finance structures.
  • Act as part of a global product team within Law Group responsible for policy work relating to the Bank's securities finance activities.
  • Provide sound legal risk analysis in a user-friendly manner and assess and anticipate the needs of the businesses and functional partners.
  • Manage the activities of external counsel to identify the optimal resources for resolving issues and manage the quality and cost of the external legal services.
  • Leverage legal expertise and financial services knowledge across Law Group and develop/maintain up-to-date precedent and know-how files to ensure delivery of coordinated, efficient and comprehensive solutions.

Must-have

  • Qualified lawyer with extensive relevant experience in securities finance, commodities and/or derivatives, in private practice or as in‐house counsel.
  • Proven business/industry expertise with in-depth, specialised expertise in the legal and regulatory framework applicable to Global Markets products.
  • Experience working in large cross‐jurisdictional teams, collaborating and successfully implementing key projects and initiatives.
  • Highly motivated, proactive and efficient team player who contributes to the continuous improvement of the Law Group; results oriented and well organised.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, and influence in a variety of formats and venues.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Ability to analyse legal risk in context of business realities and be flexible in approach.
  • High level of commitment to providing exceptional service in a timely and innovative manner.
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Be eager to learn and comfortable managing competing priorities while working under tight deadlines.
