What does the role look like?

As the Principal Electronics Engineer, you will be a key member of a multi-functional engineering team, driving innovation and excellence in electronic systems. Your role spans supporting new business acquisition, new product introduction (NPI), and technology development. You will help ensure the continuity of production and resolve issues through root-cause failure investigations. This is a hands-on role where you will apply advanced electronics system skills to develop robust circuit solutions for electric motor actuation systems used in demanding aerospace environments.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

  • Design and Analysis: Undertake the detailed design, build, testing, and analysis of electronic circuits for new products. Lead the architectural design of electronic products with full regard to available technology, in-service reliability, cost, and schedule.
  • Documentation and Testing: Generate comprehensive electronics design definition documentation and detailed test plans to support system integration and verification. Produce high-quality engineering reports and sub-system specifications.
  • Innovation and Problem-Solving: Develop conceptual electronics solutions for bids and proposals. Direct and perform fault investigations to the component level, ensuring timely resolution of issues.
  • Collaboration and Compliance: Work within a multifunctional Integrated Product Team (IPT) to deliver projects successfully. Collaborate with engineering teams across multiple locations and contribute to the development of standard work and best practices.
  • Supplier and Component Management: Review and assess electronics data from suppliers, including proposals and test reports. Select and justify alternative components for obsolescence replacement as per the Collins Change Management process.

Essential skills:

  • Safety Critical Application Experience: Demonstrable expertise in working with safety-critical systems, ensuring designs meet stringent reliability and compliance standards.
  • Harsh Environment Experience - Defence / Aerospace / Automotive: Proven experience in developing and implementing electronics solutions that perform reliably in challenging and demanding environments.
  • Advanced Electronics Hardware Design & Analysis Skills: Expertise in complex circuit design, analysis, and optimisation, ensuring high levels of in-service reliability and performance.

Desirable skills:

  • Educational Background: A degree in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrable experience (preferably within aerospace or a similar safety-critical industry).
  • Technology Specialisations: Familiarity with electronic control of brushless DC motors, experience in power electronics and power supply design, understanding of industry best practices, including EMC and certification standards.
  • Professional Attributes: Excellent problem-solving capabilities with a proactive approach. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Effective time management and multi-tasking abilities, working consistently to Collins procedures and best practices.
  • Additional Experience: Experience in new technology development, NPI, supplier data evaluation, and the specification and validation of test equipment will further enhance your contribution to the team.
