Our University Ravensbourne University London is a dynamic institution at the intersection of creativity, business, and technology. Based in London’s Design District in the heart of North Greenwich, we are home to a diverse, global community in one of the world’s most vibrant business and creative hubs.

Our BA Fashion course is internationally renowned, with a strong heritage and reputation for producing highly employable graduates with a distinctive personal design identity and excellent technical skills. Our graduate work has been recognised by the British Fashion Council and SHOWstudio, promoting our class of 2025 press show catwalk at Studio Smithfield. Previous international showcases have included catwalk shows and presentations at London Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week.

We are looking for a highly skilled fashion Technical Tutor to join our Fashion Atelier team in an exciting role that balances excellent hands-on technical tuition with the running of an outstanding digital knitting and surface embellishment facility. This is a part-time position (0.6 FTE).

Our current digital knitting machine brand is Stoll, but those with experience in comparable systems (e.g. Shima Seiki) are encouraged to apply. Please highlight this in your application.

The Role & Candidate

You bring hands-on expertise with both digital and analogue knitting, confidently programming and operating digital knitting machines alongside analogue equipment such as Dubied and domestic knitting machines. You are equally driven to extend that expertise more widely into surface embellishment, from digital embroidery to large-format textile printing, picking up complementary skills and processes as our facilities and curriculum evolve.

Technical skills teaching and student support is at the core of what you do, though you will also be equally invested in the course and university's wider success – producing pieces for exhibitions, competition entries and marketing campaigns, and collaborating with industry partners as part of our learning with industry strategy. You take pride in all aspects of your work and bring a strong sense of professionalism and healthy perfectionism to your role. This extends to the Digital Knit and Surface Embellishment facility itself, where you take ownership of its organisation, presentation and safety, ensuring it is a space that reflects the standards of the course and inspires the students who work in it. You genuinely value being meticulously organised and safety-focused – an example you are determined to set for your students to help elevate them even further.

If you are excited to blend digital and analogue knitting teaching with a diverse range of surface embellishment processes and be a key contributor to a dynamic, technology-forward institution, we would love to hear from you.

Application & Interview Requirements

Please attach to your application a PDF portfolio demonstrating some key work and/or teaching case studies pertinent to the position and role requirements. Well-designed portfolios demonstrating your process and thinking, not only the end-result, are especially appreciated. Applications without a PDF portfolio attached will not be considered.

Interviews will consist of an initial Q&A interview with a panel, followed by a technical assessment. You will be expected to replicate a knitted sample (with artwork and materials provided by us) using our Stoll Knitting Machine (CMS 502 HP+) and Complett Linking Machine. You will also be asked to demonstrate competence on either our Dubied or domestic analogue knitting machines by producing a small sample. The entire interview process is expected to last around 2.5 hours.

We Offer

  • Generous leave
  • Competitive Pension Scheme
  • An Employee Assistance programme
  • A cycle-to-work scheme
  • £36,571 to £40,485 per annum. Ravensbourne will also contribute 14.2% towards your membership in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
