Chair and Treasurer (separate volunteer positions)

RATS Animal Rescue provides love, care, and protection for unwanted and abandoned dogs, cats, and small mammals. The charity is dedicated to finding committed, loving homes for their animals.

This is a part-time volunteer role. The Chair will be responsible for leading the monthly committee meetings, overseeing various operations and promoting the mission of the rescue.

Chair Requirements

  • Lead the committee of trustees
  • Commitment to promoting the mission and values of RATS Animal Rescue
  • Ensure smooth running of board meetings
  • Strong people skills are essential
  • Promote and ensure good governance and compliance
  • Work closely with the bookkeeper, treasurer and auditor on all financial matters – a strong financial understanding is important
  • Development of a forward-looking business plan and strategy for the charity
  • Spearhead charity-specific initiatives as required e.g. the redevelopment of the kennels facility in Hertfordshire
  • Attend key fundraising events throughout the year in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire
  • Ability to unify the charity and bring the key areas of the charity together
  • Strong communication and project management skills
  • Support all trustees as required
  • Willingness to attend monthly trustee meetings in person
  • Prior experience of having been a charity trustee or similar role

Treasurer Role Description

This is a part-time volunteer role. The Treasurer will be responsible for managing the charity’s finances, including budgeting, financial reporting, and overseeing financial transactions.

Treasurer Requirements

  • Work closely with the charity’s bookkeeper, to oversee the management of the charity’s finances
  • Work closely with the chair to ensure good financial processes and systems are in place
  • Liaise with the charity’s auditor on the annual Independent Examination
  • Prepare a monthly management account pack and presenting these at the trustee meetings
  • Willing to visit the kennels near Buntingford, the charity shop in Biggleswade and to attend monthly trustee meetings in person
  • Management of collection tins
  • Responsible for the charity’s daily banking and bank accounts
  • Strong cash management and attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good understanding of financial management and reporting
  • Knowledge of accounting software such as Xero or QuickBooks is beneficial, but not essential
  • Knowledge of non-profit financial regulations
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Professional accounting, finance or similar qualification is desirable, but not essential
