Role Overview

We are seeking a Prototype Technician / Engineering Technician to support engineering activities involved in the development, build, and testing of complex CT X-ray inspection systems. This is a hands-on, practical role, ideal for someone early in their engineering career who enjoys working with mechanical assemblies and is keen to learn and develop their skills within a supportive engineering environment.

Working closely with experienced Engineers and Test teams, you will contribute to the build and modification of engineering prototypes, assist with test system upgrades, and help ensure the efficient day-to-day running of the product test environment. Full training and guidance will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support engineering activities for the development and testing of CT X-ray inspection machines
  • Assist with the mechanical assembly and build of prototype and test systems
  • Support senior engineers with prototype builds, upgrades, and modifications
  • Carry out hands-on mechanical and hardware changes under guidance
  • Assist Engineering and Test teams during product testing activities
  • Help maintain an efficient and safe product test environment, including:
    • Supporting space planning and layout activities
    • Assisting with the movement and setup of equipment
    • Organising test equipment, tools, and components
    • Helping with the preparation of services such as power supplies and communication lines

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Some proven experience in mechanical assembly or workshop-based engineering (e.g. shopfloor assembly, technician role, apprenticeship, or similar)
  • A relevant technical qualification such as BTEC, NVQ, City & Guilds, apprenticeship, or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Good practical mechanical skills and a willingness to learn new assembly and prototyping techniques
  • A positive, enthusiastic approach, with the ability to follow instructions and learn from experienced colleagues
  • Comfortable working as part of a team while developing confidence to take on tasks independently
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)

Desirable:

  • Exposure to working in a manufacturing, engineering, or test environment
  • Interest in complex systems, electro-mechanical equipment, or product testing
  • Forklift licence or willingness to undertake training
  • Awareness of high-voltage or safety-critical equipment (training can be provided)
  • Basic electrical/electronic fault finding and the ability to read circuit diagrams
