Bookkeeper / Payroll Administrator

Location: Harrow on the Hill

Salary: £28,000 – 30,000 depending on experience

The Opportunity

Our client, an established and growing accountancy practice, is looking to recruit a Bookkeeper / Payroll Administrator to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with around 1–2 years’ experience who is looking to develop their career within an accountancy practice environment. The successful candidate will work with a varied portfolio of clients, supporting them with day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll and related compliance requirements.

The role would suit someone who is organised, accurate and comfortable managing multiple client deadlines, with good communication skills and a willingness to continue developing their technical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of bookkeeping and payroll duties, including:

  • Maintaining accurate bookkeeping records for a portfolio of clients
  • Processing purchase and sales invoices
  • Completing bank and credit card reconciliations
  • Maintaining purchase, sales and nominal ledgers
  • Preparing and submitting VAT returns
  • Assisting with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements
  • Processing weekly and monthly client payrolls
  • Calculating PAYE, National Insurance, statutory payments, pensions and other payroll deductions
  • Processing starters and leavers and maintaining accurate payroll records
  • Preparing and submitting payroll information to HMRC under RTI
  • Supporting clients with workplace pension and auto-enrolment requirements
  • Responding to routine bookkeeping and payroll queries from clients
  • Liaising with HMRC where appropriate
  • Assisting senior members of the team with year-end accounts preparation and other accounting work where required
  • Ensuring client work is completed accurately and within agreed deadlines

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Approximately 1–2 years’ bookkeeping and/or payroll experience, ideally gained within an accountancy practice
  • A good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping and reconciliations
  • Practical knowledge of UK payroll processes, PAYE and RTI
  • Experience preparing VAT returns
  • Good attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills
  • Confidence communicating with clients by telephone and email
  • The ability to manage several client deadlines at the same time
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn and develop

Systems Experience

Experience with some of the following would be advantageous:

Xero | QuickBooks | Sage | Dext | BrightPay | Microsoft Excel

Training can be provided where required, so experience across every system is not essential.

Qualifications

AAT studies or an AAT qualification would be beneficial but are not essential where the candidate has relevant practical experience.

Support towards further professional development may be available for the right candidate.
