BACKGROUND
Rangers Football Club, formed in 1872, is one of the world’s longest established and most successful clubs, having won 55 League titles, 34 Scottish Cups, 28 League Cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972.
Few clubs can match Rangers for history, heritage, and tradition, and it resides in the top 10 strongest football brands according to the YouGov UK Brand Index.
Playing at the iconic 51,700 seat Ibrox Stadium and benefitting from a world-class 37-acre training facility, the club has been a leading light in Scottish, British and European football for decades.
The club benefits from a famously loyal support and the high volume of season ticket uptake means the club features in the top 19 average attendances in Europe. It is estimated that Rangers has a global fanbase of 4m, half of which are based in the UK.
THE ROLE
We’re looking for someone to take the lead on how Rangers tells its story off the pitch. This role is about making sure the club’s voice is strong, clear and consistent when it comes to everything beyond football. That includes supporter communications, ticketing updates, stadium information, commercial partnerships and community outreach. You will make sure supporters are kept informed, policies are explained clearly, and the club’s wider work is communicated with professionalism and pride.
Reporting to the Head of Communications and working closely with the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, you will lead the development and delivery of a corporate communications plan that supports the club’s wider strategy. You will play a key role in how Rangers engages with supporters, partners, stakeholders and the public while helping to protect and enhance the club’s reputation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supporter communications: Take responsibility for clear, consistent and timely communication with supporters on key issues including ticketing, stadium information, matchday operations, behaviour, policies and supporter-facing campaigns. Drive efforts to raise awareness of our supporter engagement work.
- Corporate communications planning: Lead the development and delivery of a structured communications plan for non-football activity that aligns with the club’s overall communications strategy and supports its wider objectives.
- Internal communications: Develop and manage clear, timely internal communications that keep staff informed and connected, including newsletters, briefings and updates on club-wide initiatives and operational matters.
- Media relations: Build and maintain strong working relationships with journalists across sport, news and business. Be a visible and trusted point of contact for media covering Rangers’ off-field matters.
- Media management: Manage media enquiries related to non-football topics. Brief and support club staff ahead of interviews, appearances or public engagements to ensure confidence and consistency in how the club is represented.
- Content creation: Draft and review written content including press releases, supporter updates, internal briefings, shareholder communications and web articles. Ensure all material is accurate, clear and reflective of the club’s tone and values.
- Campaign delivery: Plan and help deliver communications campaigns that are visually clear, accessible and impactful. Use social media and digital platforms effectively to inform supporters and stakeholders about key updates, policies, events and initiatives.
- Commercial communications: Work closely with the Commercial and Partnerships teams to deliver announcements, activations and campaign activity. Ensure all messaging is aligned and amplifies the club’s partnerships. Draft award submissions where relevant to help raise our profile in the industry.
- Board and regulatory communications: Contribute to board-level communication, including shareholder updates, reports, official statements and regulatory matters.
- Charity and community: Collaborate with the Rangers Charity Foundation to promote its work and help connect its impact to the club’s wider mission. Support the delivery and future development of the Everyone Anyone campaign. Promote the great work the club does in the community.
- Stakeholder communications: Play an active role in communicating with the club’s key stakeholders, including supporters, local organisations, business partners, public bodies and governing authorities.
- Crisis communications: Assist in planning for and responding to reputational issues, ensuring the club is well-prepared and well-represented in high-pressure moments.
- Monitoring and evaluation: Track, analyse and report on the performance of communications across media and digital platforms. You’ll contribute to daily media reporting and will use these insights to help shape and improve future work.
- Professional representation: Uphold the club’s reputation by ensuring all communications are professional, consistent and aligned with Rangers’ values.
THE CANDIDATE
- Experience in a communications or media role, ideally within a complex or high-profile organisation.
- You won’t need football on your CV, but you do need a feel for the game, a real understanding of our club, and a sense of what matters to Rangers supporters.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt your tone for different formats and audiences.
- A practical and confident approach to planning and delivering campaigns across digital, print and in-person channels.
- Good judgement and professionalism when dealing with the media or representing the club in sensitive situations.
