JOB TITLE: Trainee Sport Psychologist

LOCATIONS: The Rangers Training Centre

PLACEMENT: 12 months – start date August 2025

REQUIREMENTS: Minimum 2 days per week – must be flexible to work evenings or weekends

THE ROLE

An opportunity has arisen to join Rangers Football Club academy as a Trainee Sport and Exercise Psychologist. In this role you will work closely with coaching staff and support staff in training and match day to identify areas of player development. There will be opportunity to provide one-to-one, group and on-pitch based support for players on their psychological development, performance and health. You will be involved in the creation and delivery of parent, carer and player workshops/resources for specific age groups/phases. You will be supported to provide CPD workshops to support the professional development of staff across the academy. You will be provided with regular supervision from your line manager.

This is a fully immersive placement and not a clinic style role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Your responsibilities will include the following:

· To provide one-to-one, group and on-pitch based support for players on their psychological developments, performance and health.

· Support players through key transition phases (such as moving up age groups/joining and exiting the club).

· To observe and assess training/games to identify areas of strength and development, providing feedback to coaching or support staff and to inform practice.

· To utilise on-pitch observations to inform and aid understanding of interventions in relation to player psychological support.

· To work closely with coaching staff and support staff in training and match day to identify areas of player development and establish individualised action plans.

· Support and advise coaches/support staff with player development, to attend and contribute towards MDT meetings.

· To maintain good communications between all departments within the academy, sharing information in compliance with confidentiality and ethically.

· Develop and maintain appropriate relationships with players, coaches and members of the multidisciplinary team.

· Provide educational workshops and resources for parents, guardians and host families throughout the season.

· To refer players to your line manager for assessment and screening in relation to their mental health.

· Proactively share/contribute to applied research projects as directed line manager.

· To keep secure and up-to-date records of your work, that are compliant with GDPR guidelines.

· To comply and engage in training to ensure an understanding of best practice in relation to young people and/or vulnerable young adults.

· To ensure safe practice and adherence to club and government policy, ethical codes of conduct (HCPC and BPS).

Acknowledge the scope and limits of your practice and understand when to engage in supervision or refer to your line manager.

THE CANDIDATE

The candidate attributes include:

· Experience of working with children and young people within a sporting environment or similar.

· Experience of delivering applied psychological support.

· Working towards HCPC chartership in Sport and Exercise Psychologist.

· Undergraduate degree in psychology, sport and exercise psychology or similar.

· Msc in applied sport psychology or similar OR working towards completion of DPsych Sport and Exercise Psychology.

· Developing skills in one or more therapeutic orientation (CBT/PCT/ACT/CFT).

· Able to generate and organise individual sessions autonomously.

· Ability to adapt to individual/group needs.

· Flexible in approach to practice.

· Availability on evenings and weekends.

· Experience of working within academy football.

· UK driving license.
