We are partnering with the Northern Ireland Assembly to appoint an Interpreter/Translator (Irish Language) within the Official Report team. This role offers the opportunity to facilitate democratic proceedings, deliver high-quality simultaneous interpretation and text translation services and contribute directly to the language and reporting functions of a key public sector institution.

What we need from you

  • Availability to undertake an assignment starting September 2026 until March 2027
  • Flexibility to work 22.2 hours per week (Monday & Tuesday onsite in Parliament Buildings, 3rd day to be agreed)
  • Flexibility to work unsocial hours/evenings on Assembly sitting days (with Time Off In Lieu provided)
  • Willingness to complete a Basic Access NI check

Essential Qualifications

  • GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in 4 subjects (other than English language) and GCSE grade A or above (or equivalent) in English Language plus a recognised qualification in Irish equivalent to or higher than A-level
  • At least 1 year's experience providing interpretation and translation services in respect of the Irish language OR Excellent oral and written Irish and English knowledge and skills, plus at least 3 years' experience providing interpretation and translation services in respect of the Irish language

Experience Required

  • Providing Irish to English, and on occasion vice versa, simultaneous interpretation fluently, confidently and accurately in a formal or public sector setting
  • Delivering text translation, subtitle creation, written reporting and general editorial or proofreading services in Irish and English
  • Working independently and as part of a wider team to produce accurate, high-quality results to strict timelines and legislative schedules
  • Managing personal performance and taking initiative to identify personal development needs

Responsibilities

  • Simultaneous Interpretation - Provide Irish to English, and on occasion vice versa, simultaneous interpretation fluently, confidently and accurately for Assembly plenary sittings, Committee meetings and other official events.
  • Reporting & Documentation - Provide written reports of any Irish used during Assembly plenary sittings, Committee meetings and other events as required.
  • Translation & Editorial Services - Provide text translation, subtitle production, and general editorial or proofreading advice across Irish and English text.
  • Operational Support & Performance - Manage personal performance, act on manager direction, and perform duties in line with the scheduling and timing of Assembly business, including unsocial hours during sittings.
