Title: Machinist / Skilled Operator
Location: Croydon, South London
Hours: Monday – Friday (36.5 hours per week)
Salary: 18.96 – 21.33 per hour
We are looking for an experienced Machinist to join our team in Croydon. Our workshop specializes in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of mechanical equipment for the Rail, Marine, Power, Oil, and Gas industries.
This is not a production line role. We handle a wide variety of tasks daily, from making repairs and returning parts to tolerance, to manufacturing special tooling. The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter who can flourish in a varied environment and become a key support to all overhaul teams on-site.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpreting engineering drawings to guide the machining process.
- Setting up and operating a variety of manual machines including lathes, milling, drilling, boring, and grinding machines.
- Working to precise specifications and tolerances, using measuring tools like calipers and micrometers.
- Developing and producing basic tooling and modifications to help workshop teams overcome challenges.
- Liaising with production management on job planning and scheduling.
- Carrying out balancing tasks on components and assemblies.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Time-served apprentice-trained or equivalent qualification.
- Extensive experience in an engineering environment with a mechanical aptitude.
- Significant experience in using and setting up manual machining equipment.
- Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings in both metric and imperial units. An understanding of imperial units, tolerances, and fasteners is essential.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to work independently.
- A flexible approach to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing demands.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
- Experience with balancing is advantageous, but training will be provided for an experienced machinist.
- Due to the nature of our work in regulated industries such as rail, full compliance with national drug and alcohol testing programs is mandatory.
