We are seeking a compassionate, highly skilled, and resilient Qualified Teacher (QTS) to provide bespoke 1:1 educational support for a bright and engaging student with a diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). This role is ideal for a practitioner who excels at "thinking outside the box" to make learning accessible for students with significant physical and cognitive barriers.

The Student Profile

  • Cognition & Learning: Learner works below age-related expectations. You will need to break down the curriculum into "micro-steps," focusing on one simple task at a time and providing significant processing time.
  • Communication: He utilises a mix of paper-based communication books and a specialised iPad via the Lincoln Electronic Assistive Technology Service (EATS). You will play a vital role in integrating this device into his daily learning.
  • Physical Needs: Due to progressive muscle weakness, learner uses a wheelchair for longer distances and has significant mobility limitations. All learning environments must be fully accessible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver 15 hours of 1:1 tuition tailored to specific cognitive pace and physical energy levels.
  • Utilise 1.5 hours of dedicated planning time to create visual resources, objects of reference, and simplified curriculum materials.
  • Work closely with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) tools to ensure learner has a functional voice in every lesson.
  • Monitor progress through small-step assessment frameworks, celebrating non-linear gains.

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): Mandatory.
  • DBS: Must hold an enhanced DBS currently on the Update Service.
  • SEND Experience: Proven track record working with learners with complex physical disabilities and/or severe learning difficulties (SLD).
  • Tech Savvy: Comfort using or learning to use EATS-assigned assistive communication devices.
  • Adaptability: A gentle, encouraging teaching style that can pivot based on the student's physical well-being on any given day.
