Mobility Trainer (Higher Education)

About the Role

/n

We are seeking qualified Mobility Trainers to provide essential orientation and mobility training to higher education students in Lancaster.

/n

In this role, you will deliver time-limited, individualised orientation programmes to enable visually impaired students and students with other complex orientation needs to travel safely, efficiently, and independently around campus.

/n

Key Responsibilities

/n

- Conduct professional location and route assessments across campus buildings, lecture halls, libraries, and surrounding transport hubs.

/n

- Design and execute tailored, time-limited mobility and orientation training plans based on individual student needs.

/n

- Teach safe route-finding techniques, spatial awareness, and the use of mobility aids (e.g., long cane, navigation tools).

/n

- Liaise accordingly to ensure appropriate environmental adjustments and support measures are in place.

/n

- Monitor student progress, review support goals, and promote long-term student independence.

/n

Mandatory Requirements

/n

To deliver NMH Mobility Training, candidates must meet the criteria set out below:

/n

1. Mandatory Qualifications (Must hold at least ONE of the following):- BSc / BSc (Hons) Degree in Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment)- PG Dip in Habilitation and Disabilities of Sight (Children and Young People) (Note: Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma, followed by a probationary year, is a registration requirement of the UK Habilitation Professional Body, Habilitation VI UK)- Certification in Habilitation Studies- Foundation Degree in Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment)- Diploma in Higher Education in Rehabilitation Studies (Visual Impairment)- BTEC Professional Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies (Visual Impairment)- Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care in Rehabilitation Studies (Visual Impairment)- Habilitation Work - Working with Children and Young People - Top Up Degree - BSc (Hons)- Habilitation and Disabilities of Sight Graduate Diploma Course at UCL Institute of Education (IOE)- Graduate Diploma in Low Vision Rehabilitation- Combined Mobility Officer and Technical Officer Certificate- Original Certificate in Rehabilitation Work (Note: Proof required of relevant work undertaken that is applicable to helping HE students)- National Occupational Standards (Sensory Standards) qualifications. 2. Mandatory Professional Body Membership (Must hold ONE of the following):- Rehabilitation Workers Professional Network (RWPN) - Full or Associate Membership (with experience in mobility and orientation training for adults/HE students).- Habilitation VI UK - Registered member (with proof of relevant experience applicable to adult/HE student support).Desirable Skills & Experience

- Experience working within UK Higher or Further Education settings.

/n

- Strong understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.

/n

- Excellent communication skills and a student-centred approach to developing independent living and travel skills.
