Randstad Sourceright, a leading provider of RPO & MSP Recruitment Services, is currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Estimator on behalf of Balfour Beatty. This role is essential for delivering accurate cost estimation, pricing changes, and capturing operational risks to ensure the successful commercial execution of high-profile energy transition and infrastructure developments, including the Net Zero Teesside project.
Job Purpose
To be responsible for pricing change, capturing operational risks, and ensuring accurate and effective delivery of estimating services during the execution of the project in compliance with contract requirements by implementing effective estimating strategies.
Responsibilities
- Estimating Leadership & Mentorship: Act as a senior figure within the estimating team, managing workload allocations across assigned bid teams and providing commercial/technical mentoring.
- Costing & Analysis: Review drawings, specifications, and customer MTOs to prepare precise costing sheets for materials, labor, and equipment. Perform detailed analysis of subcontractor proposals and establish key plant rates.
- Mechanical & Heavy Industrial Scopes: Price complex mechanical installation elements, including large HRSG Boilers ($2000+ Te), Steam Turbine Generators ($500MW+), skids/modules, and high-integrity/exotic pipework systems.
- Risk & Submission Management: Coordinate preliminary/general expense pricing, plant schedules, and risk assessments. Prepare settlement papers and take responsibility for signing off cost elements prior to financial submissions.
- Digital & Process Integration: Implement digital estimating tools, such as 5D cost planning, Lean Construction principles, and BIM model take-offs.
- Commercial Handover & Client Engagement: Manage customer contact, present proposals, respond to post-tender queries, and ensure a seamless bid handover to the project commercial execution team.
About You
- Industry Experience: Proven background managing estimating processes within the construction sector, specifically on tenders across petrochemical, nuclear, or highly regulated environments.
- Technical Expertise: Demonstrated experience estimating erection/installation hours for heavy mechanical plant (HRSG boilers, steam turbines) and strong knowledge of high-integrity/exotic pipework.
- Industrial Agreements & Take-Offs: Hands-on experience working with NAECI Labour agreements and developing/pricing customer MTOs.
- Qualifications & Cards: Valid CSCS card is required. Relevant professional membership/qualification (e.g., RICS, CIBSE, CIOB, ICE) is highly desirable.
- Key Skills: Strong IT and estimating system proficiency, excellent communication skills under time pressures, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to Balfour Beatty's values of Zero Harm and sustainability.
