Position: Head of Department Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Location: Essex

Contract Type: Full‑Time Permanent position

Qualification: A relevant degree and QTS, proven leadership experience.

Randstad Education is seeking a qualified teacher (QTS) with a passion for French and Spanish to lead a school's MFL department. The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping an innovative curriculum and inspiring a love of languages and culture in both students and staff. This is a permanent position and you will be required to support five days a week Monday – Friday inline with school hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the MFL department, managing staff performance and professional development.
  • Set the strategic direction for the MFL curriculum (KS3‑KS5).
  • Be accountable for teaching standards and student attainment.
  • Use student data to track progress and drive departmental improvement.
  • Manage the departmental budget and resources.
  • Lead and develop the extra‑curricular and enrichment programme.
  • Ensure full departmental compliance with safeguarding and all school policies.

Preferred Skills:

  • A degree in French, Spanish, or a related languages field.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Significant experience as a secondary MFL Teacher.
  • Proven leadership experience within a school (e.g., Second in Department, Key Stage Lead).
  • A strong track record of improving student attainment and exam results in MFL.
  • Experience in curriculum design and strategic departmental planning.
  • Skill in analysing student data to inform teaching strategies.
