The Opportunity

Are you an ambitious special education leader in Northern Ireland finding permanent, top tier leadership opportunities slow to open up at home? We are partnering with an outstanding independent special education provider to find a proven SEN Headteacher ready to make a career defining move to Yorkshire. Hull offers an exceptionally affordable cost of living and is just a short, accessible flight away from home, making it the perfect location for a rewarding relocation. This is a true greenfield project demanding practical execution from a seasoned SEN expert. You will lead a brand new school launch from the ground up, shaping the culture and staff team completely from scratch. You will never be left isolated; you will receive immense operational support from an experienced Chief Operating Officer who can navigate Ofsted inspections blindfolded, allowing you to focus on visible, transformative leadership on the school floor.

About the Setting

Set across a spacious 10 acre site in Hull that previously operated as a nursery and school, this completely refurbished facility opens this autumn. The modern therapeutic setting will accommodate up to 60 students aged 5 to 19 who require an individualised approach to education. The school specialises in supporting young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and associated speech, language, and communication needs. The pupil profile focuses entirely on low acuity social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) behaviours tied to their pre-existing diagnoses.

The Approach / Pedagogy

Learning is tailored across three distinct pathways mapped directly to each child's EHCP. The curriculum blends academic milestones, such as GCSEs and Entry Level certifications, with functional skills and independent living preparation. Grounded in a trauma informed framework, the school utilises proactive behaviour strategies to support self regulation.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Maintain a highly visible, personable presence across the school floor, avoiding an office bound leadership style.
  • Provide calm, steady energy and direct guidance to staff during moments of student dysregulation.
  • Partner closely with the Chief Operating Officer and internal executive team to ensure flawless school operations.
  • Cultivate a supportive, collaborative staff culture where team members feel confident sharing their therapeutic strengths.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with parents, carers, and local authority placement teams to champion student retention.

What We Are Looking For

Qualifications: Valid Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) paired with a completed, recognised postgraduate educational leadership qualification (such as an NPQH, NPQSL, or equivalent).

Characteristics: Deep, practical leadership experience within a specialist SEN or alternative provision setting. You must possess exceptional emotional intelligence, a hands on doer mentality, and a genuine heart for removing barriers to learning.

Transport & Commute: Complete willingness to relocate to Hull. Flexibility to spend an initial induction period at the provider's established sister site in Redford to fully absorb the company ethos is highly preferred.

Safeguarding & Compliance

This position is subject to an Enhanced DBS check, verification of right to work in the UK, and satisfactory professional references. Applicants must provide a complete, unbroken chronological CV history detailing all employment and education gaps.
