This specialist autism school provides a nurturing and highly personalised learning environment for children and young people with autism and complex communication needs. Through evidence-based teaching approaches, embedded therapeutic support, small class groups, and a strong focus on communication, independence, and emotional wellbeing, pupils are empowered to develop the skills and confidence needed to achieve their full potential. Location: Sharpthorne, East Sussex
Timings: Monday-Friday | 8:45am-5:00pm (4:30pm finish Fridays)
Salary: £20,000-£22,000 per annum
The Role
As a Trainee Tutor, you will receive comprehensive training to deliver structured 1:1 teaching sessions and support pupils throughout their school day. Working alongside experienced Class Leaders, Teachers, and therapists, you will help implement individual learning programmes, behaviour support strategies, and life-skills development while gaining valuable experience within specialist autism education.
Responsibilities
- Deliver individualised teaching sessions to assigned pupils
- Support children with autism and communication needs using behaviour-based teaching approaches
- Collect, monitor, and record pupil progress data
- Assist with sensory learning, life skills, and extracurricular activities
- Support pupils during lunch, playtimes, and outdoor learning activities
- Work towards keyworker responsibilities for individual pupils
- Contribute to the preparation and organisation of teaching resources
- Support positive behaviour plans and teaching strategies
- Assist with personal care where required, including toileting, feeding, and hygiene support
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and wider school staff
- Contribute to home‑school communication and pupil progress reporting
