Are you an experienced and dynamic Design Manager looking for a challenging freelance opportunity with a leading multi-billion-pound contractor?
My client is seeking a talented and proactive Freelance Design Manager to join their team for a significant £300 million prison extension project. This is a critical role focusing on the complex Geo & Civils works packages, demanding a proven track record in managing multi-disciplinary design teams and ensuring the successful delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects.
About the Project:
Our client is a multi-billion-pound, Tier 1 contractor renowned for delivering complex and high-profile projects across the UK. This £300 million prison extension is a vital infrastructure development, involving extensive ground engineering, earthworks, foundations, drainage, and other civil engineering elements.
The Role:
As the Freelance Design Manager for the Geo & Civils packages, you will be responsible for:
Design Leadership: Leading and managing the design process for all Geo & Civils elements, ensuring compliance with project requirements, technical specifications, and relevant standards.
Stakeholder Management: Collaborating effectively with internal teams (operations, commercial, planning), the client, specialist consultants, and external stakeholders.
Technical Assurance: Reviewing and challenging designs, ensuring buildability, value engineering, and adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Programme & Budget Control: Managing design programmes and budgets, identifying potential risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
Coordination: Facilitating seamless coordination between various design disciplines and the construction team.
Documentation: Ensuring all design documentation is accurate, complete, and properly controlled.
Problem Solving: Proactively identifying and resolving design-related issues and clashes.
About You:
Proven Experience: Demonstrable experience as a Design Manager on large-scale infrastructure projects, ideally within the civil engineering or heavy civils sector. Experience with justice or secure environment projects is a significant advantage.
Geo & Civils Expertise: Strong technical understanding and experience specifically with ground engineering, earthworks, foundations, drainage, and associated civil works.
Client-Side / Contractor Experience: Experience working with or for Tier 1 contractors on multi-billion-pound projects is highly desirable.
Qualifications: A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. Professional accreditation (e.g., CEng, MICE) is preferred.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical information clearly.
Collaborative Approach: A strong team player with the ability to influence and build effective working relationships.
Problem-Solving Skills: An analytical mindset with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
Proactive & Organised: Highly organised with a strong ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
