We’re currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a major infrastructure programme at Gatwick Airport. This is a long-term opportunity within a high-profile aviation environment, with a significant programme of work now moving into delivery. The programme is expected to provide at least four years of work, offering excellent stability and the opportunity to build valuable experience within the aviation and wider infrastructure sectors.
The Senior Quantity Surveyor will provide a full quantity surveying service across assigned projects, working closely with Programme Managers, Project Managers, Commercial Managers and the wider project team from inception through to completion.
You will typically take responsibility for projects valued at £10m+, while also supporting Commercial Managers on larger projects potentially exceeding £100m. Responsibilities will include:
- Developing and maintaining complete project cost plans and cost estimates.
- Supporting governance, procurement and risk drawdown processes.
- Managing project budgets and ensuring value for money.
- Validating costs using appropriate internal and external benchmarks.
- Assessing contractor payment applications.
- Producing monthly cost reports, including Anticipated Final Cost, Actual Cost of Work Performed and Forecast to Completion.
- Managing contracts of varying values and complexity.
- Administering NEC Options A, C and E.
- Managing Early Warnings, Project Manager’s Instructions and Compensation Events.
- Reviewing contractor notifications and managing contractual communications.
- Supporting commercial negotiations and dispute resolution.
- Supporting tendering and evaluation processes.
- Producing pre-tender estimates.
- Maintaining project risk and opportunity registers.
- Managing project close-out, including defects, warranties and financial close-out.
- Providing asset cost information for capitalisation.
- Supervising and supporting Assistant Quantity Surveyors and Quantity Surveyors.
We’re looking for a commercially strong Senior QS who is confident working on major projects and can take ownership of their responsibilities. Ideally, you’ll have:
- Around 5+ years’ relevant Quantity Surveying experience.
- Experience delivering full QS services on projects typically valued at £50m+.
- Experience managing projects or packages typically £10m+.
- Experience supporting larger programmes/projects potentially exceeding £100m.
- Strong knowledge of NEC contracts, particularly Options A, C and E.
- Strong contract administration and commercial negotiation experience.
- Experience with cost planning, estimating, forecasting and financial reporting.
- A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction, Engineering or a related discipline.
- RICS membership or relevant professional qualification is highly desirable.
- Strong Microsoft Excel and IT skills.
- Experience with Cemar or similar contract management systems would be advantageous.
- Experience with SAP or similar cost/project control systems would be advantageous.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong commercial and financial awareness.
- Personal resilience and the ability to operate effectively within ambiguity.
- Airport experience would be highly desirable.
Aviation Experience Isn’t Essential: If you have strong major infrastructure experience from rail, highways or another comparable sector, you will still be considered. The key is having the technical and commercial capability to operate successfully on a complex infrastructure programme.
The role is based at Gatwick Airport, with 4 days per week on site currently required. This is a key project requirement during the initial phase. Once established within the project, there may be scope to review the working arrangement after approximately 6–12 months, potentially moving towards 3 days per week depending on project requirements and performance. Lodging can be considered for the right candidate, and relevant expenses can be supported.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
- Major Gatwick Airport infrastructure programme
- 4+ years of anticipated work
- Projects ranging from £10m to £100m+
- Strong exposure to NEC contracts
- Opportunity to develop specialist aviation experience
- Market-led salary
- Long-term career stability
- Opportunity to work on high-profile infrastructure
- Further opportunities across the wider infrastructure portfolio
