As we continue to grow, Rancho BioSciences is seeking a detail-oriented and scientifically grounded Ontologist to support the modeling, standardization, and integration of structured data. The ideal candidate will have a life-sciences background and experience working with biomedical ontologies, controlled vocabularies, and data standards.

What You'll Do
- Design, develop, and maintain ontologies and controlled vocabularies for domains relevant to the pharmaceutical industry.
- Harmonize and map scientific data to established biomedical ontologies and standards (e.g., CDISC, Allotrope, ISO IDMP).
- Implement, leverage, and support metadata and data management solutions and best practices.
- Work closely with subject matter experts, data scientists, and software engineers to support data modeling and knowledge graph development.
- Drive ontology governance and change management activities in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
What We're Looking For
Must-Haves
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.S.) in life sciences, chemistry, or related science fields. Bachelor's degree will be considered with 3-5 years relevant experience.
- Solid understanding of ontologies, controlled terminologies, and semantic data modeling (e.g., OWL, RDF, SKOS).
- Hands-on experience with semantic tools such as CENtree, Protégé, PoolParty, TopBraid or similar ontology development environments.
- Understanding data standards, semantics, terminologies, ontologies, and best practices for data governance.
- Familiarity with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data guiding principles.
- Excellence in managing scientific stakeholder relationships.
- Independently driven, hardworking, and committed.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with technical and non-technical teams.
- Detail-oriented and well organized, with an ability to work collaboratively and remotely.
Nice-to-Haves
- Scripting skills e.g. Python, shell-scripting, R.
- Understanding of and contributions to public biomedical ontologies and standards consortiums (e.g., BioPortal, OLS, Allotrope, IDMP, NIIMBL, MeSH, CDISC) is a plus.
- Experience with software development life cycle methodologies, unit and integration testing, and documentation development.
- Experience with data integration platforms or knowledge graphs.
- Experience translating project requirements to both business process solutions and technical solutions.

Salary range (Europe): €75,000-€90,000. We benchmark compensation by location. If you are viewing this role from outside Europe, you may see the US range ($85,000-$125,000 USD) on some platforms; that range applies only to US-based employment.
