Ramboll is recruiting a director level individual to lead the continued growth and development of our successful bridges and highways business across the south of England. We have a strong order book and our business is growing rapidly as we continue to deliver on our strategy to be our clients' preferred partner for sustainable engineering.

You will join our Bridges and Highways South department. The Bridges and Highways South department currently operates from offices in Southampton and Bristol, but we are flexible on location and encourage hybrid working with regular part-time travel to these offices. For the successful individual, there is a great opportunity to join a growing business and help shape its future direction. The successful individual will join the UK Highways Management Team and report to the Divisional Director for Highways, Infrastructure and Planning. The individual will have opportunities to develop further into broader roles within the UK highways business as we continue to grow.

Your key tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Clients: Embracing our new strategy, the partner for sustainable change, and working to ensure the service we offer our clients is aligned to this strategy through offering engineering solutions which support environmental sustainability. Work winning in collaboration with our UK Market Director and the wider divisional management team. Taking a lead on selected bids to fulfil the role of bid director. Taking an active role in client relationship management to help grow a strong and resilient business. Identifying and developing new client relationships.
  • Projects: Taking responsibility for client satisfaction for the department and playing a part in the delivery of key projects as either project director or technical specialist. Accountability for the financial performance of the portfolio of projects and supporting project directors and managers in the effective and efficient delivery of projects. Act as Project Director on large or complex projects.
  • People/leadership: Development and engagement of the team in the delivery of the departmental business targets in alignment with the highways and wider transport strategy. Leading other director level employees in the day-to-day management of operations in our Southampton and Bristol teams for a department of over 70 staff. Taking a lead role in making Bridges and Highways South a great place to work, with a particular focus on the wellbeing and inclusion of staff and in doing so deliver strong retention and staff satisfaction scores. Actively contributing as part of the UK Highways management team to lead the overall business in the UK. Responsibility for the health and safety of the team in project delivery and in the course of delivering their day-to-day duties. Responsible for adherence by the team to project and other Ramboll governance requirements.
  • Sustainability: Ensure our Sustainability commitments are reflected in both internal and external company activities, both in terms of environmental and social value.
  • Financial & Commercial: Accountability for delivery of the departmental KPIs including utilisation, revenue and gross margin.
  • Technical Excellence and Innovation: Responsible for ensuring that technical excellence is at the forefront of our project delivery and leading the team in identifying and sharing best practice. Lead the team in identifying opportunities for innovation and promote the investigation of options for further development.

  • Experience of successfully leading a senior team (director level staff) in the highways or bridges sector.
  • A successful track record of delivering key business commercial metrics including profit and loss performance.
  • Able to demonstrate successful client relationship management experience.
  • A demonstrable track record of successfully delivering major highways or bridges projects preferably including experience with National Highways or local authorities.
  • The ability to work in partnership with other consultants in design joint ventures, and with contractor clients as part of design and build opportunities.
  • Work winning skills including the ability to perform the roles of bid manager or bid director.
