We are seeking an experienced Senior/ Principal Transport Planner and Modeller to lead the delivery of complex transport modelling and development planning projects, with a particular focus on microsimulation modelling and transport appraisal. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of development, infrastructure, aviation, and public sector commissions, leading the development of robust modelling evidence to support planning applications, business cases, and transport strategies. The role combines technical excellence, project leadership, client management, and business development responsibilities.
Your new role
- Transport Planning
- Direct the preparation and review of Transport Studies, Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans and associated technical reports.
- Experience supporting masterplanning, site promotion and transport strategy development desirable.
- Experience preparing transport business cases desirable.
- Transport Modelling & Microsimulation
- Lead the development, calibration, validation and application of microsimulation models using tools such as VISSIM.
- Provide technical leadership on junction modelling and network assessments using Junctions 10, LinSig and other appropriate software.
- Develop modelling methodologies and analysis frameworks to support planning applications, infrastructure studies and business cases.
- Oversee scenario testing, sensitivity analysis and mitigation design, ensuring outputs are robust, defensible and aligned with client objectives.
- Act as technical reviewer and approver for modelling studies, maintaining high standards of quality assurance.
- Support the integration of microsimulation outputs with strategic and multimodal modelling activities where appropriate.
- Advise clients and stakeholders on modelling assumptions, methodology and interpretation of results.
- Project Leadership & Delivery
- Manage the delivery of transport planning and modelling tasks from inception through to completion.
- Have project management experience, ensuring delivery to programme, budget and quality requirements.
- Provide strategic transport advice to clients across development, infrastructure, aviation and public sector projects.
- Client and Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead technical discussions with local authorities and statutory consultees.
- Present modelling results and transport evidence at client meetings, stakeholder workshops, planning committees and public inquiries where required.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Mentor and develop junior and senior consultants within the transport planning and modelling teams.
- Lead technical training and knowledge-sharing initiatives relating to microsimulation modelling and transport planning.
- Support resource planning and capability development across the wider team.
- Promote innovation and best practice in transport modelling and digital delivery.
- Business Development
- Lead and contribute to bids, tenders and framework opportunities.
- Identify opportunities to grow modelling, appraisal and transport planning services across existing and new markets.
- Support development of key client accounts and strategic growth initiatives.
- Contribute to thought leadership, conference presentations and industry engagement activities.
About you
- Degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Mathematics or related discipline.
- Typically, 10+ years' experience in transport planning and modelling consultancy.
- Extensive experience in developing and applying microsimulation models using VISSIM.
- Strong experience in junction modelling using Junctions 10 and LinSig.
- Proven track record delivering transport evidence for major planning applications and infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of DfT TAG, NPPF and relevant transport planning guidance.
- Demonstrable project management and client leadership experience.
- Excellent analytical, report writing and presentation skills.
