This role can be located in any of our offices across the UK. Do you enjoy making sense of complex toxicology and turning it into clear advice? Do you like bringing people and ideas together to find practical solutions for clients? Are you a curious, collaborative scientist who enjoys working with clients and colleagues?
If this sounds like you, or you’re curious to learn more, then this role could be the perfect opportunity. Join our Food and Feed Safety team as our new Regulatory Toxicologist and work with us to close the gap to a sustainable future.
Your new role: As our new Regulatory Toxicologist, you will work with the Food and Feed Safety team to deliver expert scientific and regulatory advice to clients developing, registering and maintaining food and feed products in the UK and EU markets. As a Regulatory Toxicologist, you will collaborate with colleagues across toxicology, exposure assessment, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition and regulatory affairs to help define and deliver multidisciplinary projects.
You will lead technical workstreams, coordinate contributions from specialists and engage directly with clients to turn complex scientific evidence into clear, practical and defensible regulatory advice. You will be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team working across a range of food and feed safety challenges. The role offers technical consulting and project leadership opportunities.
Your key responsibilities will be:
- Toxicological assessment: Lead the evaluation of toxicological data for food, feed and related substances, assessing study quality, regulatory relevance and implications for human health, animal and environmental safety. Establish points of departure and health-based guidance values, applying weight-of-evidence, read-across, grouping and new approach methodologies (where applicable); identify data gaps and provide technical and regulatory direction.
- Exposure and risk assessment: Lead or coordinate consumer, target-animal, worker and environmental exposure assessments, integrating hazard and exposure information to characterise risk. Assess exposure against relevant toxicological reference points, including residues, carry-over, impurities, contaminants, degradation products and metabolites, while considering variability, vulnerable groups and uncertainty.
- Regulatory submissions and authority engagement: Lead or contribute to regulatory dossiers, safety assessments and responses to EFSA, the UK FSA and other relevant authoritative bodies. Develop scientifically robust rationales for waivers, read-across, testing strategies and safety conclusions, while monitoring regulatory developments and advising clients and colleagues.
- Project delivery and client support: Structure and deliver complex assignments, leading technical workstreams and coordinating multidisciplinary contributions within agreed scope, budget, quality and deadlines. Engage directly with clients, present findings and recommendations, and contribute to proposals, scopes, budgets and business development.
- Professional and capability development: Build effective relationships with clients, laboratories, external experts and project partners, while providing technical guidance, review and coaching to less experienced colleagues. Contribute to guidance, methods, templates, thought leadership and continuous improvement in scientific quality, regulatory practice and project delivery.
About you: Degree in toxicology, pharmacology, chemistry, biomedical science, biochemistry, biological sciences, food science, veterinary medicine, veterinary science or a related discipline. Postgraduate qualification in toxicology or a related subject, or equivalent relevant professional experience. Substantial experience in toxicological hazard or risk assessment within food, feed, food contact chemicals, pharmaceuticals, consumer products or another regulated sector. Strong knowledge of relevant toxicological study types, scientific literature and the principles of hazard identification, hazard characterisation, exposure assessment and risk characterisation. Experience evaluating complex toxicological evidence and applying appropriate scientific and regulatory judgement. Excellent written and spoken English, with strong scientific writing and communication skills.
What we can offer you: Commitment to your development, leaders guided by our Leadership Principles, a culture that welcomes you as the unique person you are, inspiration from colleagues, clients, and projects, the long-term thinking of a foundation-owned company, flexible work environment, 27 days annual leave plus bank holidays, matched pension contributions, private medical cover and life assurance.
