Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic plumbing knowledge.
  • Fit bathroom suites and showers.
  • Handle leaking joints, burst pipes, and freezing pipes as needed.
  • Manage blocked appliances, pipes, traps, drains, and manholes.
  • Know where to isolate a room, an area or the entire hotel.
  • Work with doors: plane, chisel, drill, hang and balance.
  • Fit locks, hinges, door closers, handles, bolts, door guards, kick plates, and push plates.
  • Basic electrical work: light bulbs, fittings, switches, plug sockets; check circuits, trace trips to distribution boards, assess why circuits are tripping, and know the location of all distribution boards.
  • Tune in and set up TV, troubleshoot problems and rectify them.
  • Basic carpentry: dry-wall construction, repair of doors and frames, skirting boards, and general wood repairs.
  • Painting and decorating: work with paints, undercoat, gloss, emulations and varnishes; prep filler, sand and seal for coatings.
  • Understand products: wallpaper, fit wall boards.
  • Tiling: apply adhesive, use a datum line for even tiles, cut, drill, fit tiles, grout, and apply silicon sealants where needed.
  • General construction skills: work with cement, concrete, bricks, slabs, roofing felt and bitumen.
  • Fit curtain rails, treat damp and remove mould.
  • Monitor heating and hot water systems.
  • Read and understand instructions.
  • Gas: know where to shut off gas in areas and buildings.
  • Health and safety training in all above areas.
  • Legionella awareness, including testing, training procedures and record keeping.
  • Full understanding of fire testing procedures and record keeping.
  • Certificates in basic electrics and plumbing are an advantage.
