Rainey Endowed School is seeking a passionate and innovative teacher to join our dynamic Physical Education department. We are also seeking a hockey coordinator who will help maintain Rainey Endowed’s success and new competition rates for girls’ hockey locally, regionally and nationally. The successful candidate will inspire and challenge pupils across PE, contribute to the delivery of a second teachable subject, and support a broad and balanced curriculum. In addition, they will support the development of our school hockey programme, promoting physical wellbeing, teamwork, and resilience while fostering skill development, performance, and a lifelong engagement in physical activity. This role includes full commitment to Saturday fixtures and to the wider life of the school. Responsible to: Head of Department – PE and Head of Hockey.

Salary: Appropriate point on the Main Pay Scale for a qualified teacher plus 1 Teaching Allowance.

Job Description

  • Be responsible to the Head of Department and work collaboratively as part of the department.
  • Contribute to the effective running and development of the department.
  • Deliver high-quality teaching of Physical Education, inspiring pupils to develop their skills, fitness, and understanding of performance, while fostering teamwork, resilience, and a positive attitude towards physical activity.
  • Contribute to the teaching of a second subject, supporting pupils in developing subject knowledge, transferable skills, and confidence in their learning to KS3.
  • Undertake pastoral responsibilities as a Form Tutor.
  • Share in supervisory duties undertaken by all members of staff.
  • Contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school.
  • Undertake such duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Principal from time to time.

Hockey Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Coach hockey teams throughout the week (after school), on timetabled match days, Saturdays, during school holidays, and in pre-season (including August pitch training), as assigned by the Head of Hockey.
  • Organise and manage all fixtures, including arranging fixture lists, contacting opponents, booking pitches and transport, and registering teams with Ulster Hockey.
  • Recruit coaches (including co-ordinating with admin staff to ensure all safeguarding checks are completed).
  • Support, and develop coaches and umpires, staffing budgets, and umpire payments.
  • Promote player and staff development, pupil leadership roles, and strong links with Rainey RFHC and feeder primary schools.
  • Ensure safeguarding, health and safety compliance, and complete risk assessments.
  • Manage hockey budgets, sponsorship for playing shirts, development funds, and procurement.
  • Oversee equipment and kit management, including stock-taking, ordering player and staff kit, and annual audits of goalkeeping equipment.
  • Organise and deliver hockey events, including dinners, tours, and supporter trips.
  • Manage and coordinate hockey social media in liaison with Rainey Endowed School channels.
  • Maintain records and celebrate achievement through engraving cup/trophies, framing winning teams, and cataloguing team and individual representative displays within the school.
  • Lead fundraising projects to support Rainey Endowed’s sports programme for current and future generations, in particular Rainey Endowed’s Hockey Development Fund.

Personnel Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Recognised teacher status to teach in an 11–19 school (completion of a PGCE in 2026 will be accepted).
  • An Honours degree in PE or a related subject (minimum 2:2).
  • Ability to deliver high-quality teaching of a second subject up to KS3.
  • Ability to teach a second subject at Key Stage 3.
  • Competence in the use of ICT and its application to the teaching of PE and a second subject.
  • Evidence of effective teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • An Honours Degree at 2:1 or above.
  • Recent experience of teaching PE at A Level.
  • Recent experience of teaching a second subject at Key Stage 3.
  • willingness and ability to contribute to the wider extra-curricular life of the school.
  • Professional and certified hockey qualification(s) in coaching and/or refereeing.
