We’re looking for a Process Engineer to join us on a 12-month fixed-term contract, supporting a key transformation programme. This is a hybrid role based in Darlington, offering the opportunity to play a leading role in shaping and improving how our processes operate at Railpen. You’ll collaborate with delivery, technology and operational teams to design and embed process solutions that support better outcomes for our members.

Who we are

Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds. Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members. Railpen takes a holistic view, focusing on how we serve members today and how we can positively impact the communities and the world they will retire into.

The role

As a Process Engineer, you’ll play a key role in designing and delivering end-to-end process improvements that support the successful delivery of programme outcomes. You’ll be responsible for analysing existing (‘as is’) processes and designing future (‘to be’) process models that improve efficiency, controls and member outcomes. Alongside this, you’ll engineer practical and scalable solutions, ensuring they are aligned to programme objectives and can be implemented effectively within delivery timelines. You’ll produce clear, structured documentation to support change, including process maps, operating models and functional specifications. Working closely with programme, technology and delivery teams, you’ll ensure process design is aligned to system changes, data flows and opportunities for digital or automation‑led improvements. You’ll also contribute to impact assessments and support decision‑making by helping to shape priorities and understand delivery implications. As a key voice within the programme, you’ll engage stakeholders to ensure process changes are well understood, effectively embedded and deliver sustainable improvements.

The person

We’re looking for someone with proven experience in a process engineering, process improvement or operational change role, ideally within a complex or regulated environment. You’ll bring strong process analysis and re‑engineering experience, with the ability to design end‑to‑end solutions that are both practical and effective. You’ll be confident working across the full lifecycle from understanding current processes through to shaping and supporting implementation of future solutions. You’ll also have:

  • Strong experience of ‘as is’ and ‘to be’ process modelling and impact assessment
  • The ability to translate complex processes into clear, structured and actionable outputs
  • Experience working alongside technology or delivery teams to support implementation
  • Confident stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and challenge constructively
  • Strong organisation and prioritisation skills, managing delivery within programme timelines

Just as importantly, you’ll be outcome‑focused, pragmatic and collaborative in your approach. You’ll be comfortable working in a fast‑paced programme environment, balancing pace with quality and taking ownership for delivering meaningful change. Our values of integrity, community and alignment are the guiding principles that influence our behaviour. They help us make decisions and shape our relationships with others. They’re what we stand for. You will actively demonstrate our values, helping to create a safe environment, to place the needs of the community above oneself and, through a culture of ‘fair challenge’, align to the best interests of our members.

What we can offer you

  • A competitive salary (depending on experience)
  • 28 days annual leave, plus bank holidays
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Health cash plan
  • Give as you earn scheme
