An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Investment team as a Trader, based in London (hybrid working) on a permanent basis.

The role

Railpen’s Trading Desk is responsible for the execution of the firm’s Public Markets cross-asset trading activity (Equities, ETFs, Fixed Income, Derivatives & FX). The Trading Desk works closely with various investment and non-investment teams across the business to sustain and enhance our execution capabilities with a focus on achieving best execution for our client. A unique aspect of a Trader role at Railpen is that while execution is the primary focus of the desk, a significant portion of the teams’ time is dedicated to trade analysis, research projects and investigating/deploying new technologies that can be used to enhance the outcome for the client.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute all trades in accordance with Railpen’s Order Execution Policy to achieve the best possible outcome for our client.
  • Utilise Transaction Cost Analytics (TCA), data analytics and market structure knowledge to improve and enhance trade execution processes and outcomes. Where appropriate develop and deploy new algorithmic strategies and/or new technologies to reduce implicit and explicit trading costs and to minimise operational risk.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of internal trade data, analytics and reports.
  • Maintain and develop counterparty relationships to improve liquidity access and execution quality while enhancing Railpen’s reputation within the market.
  • Proactively engage and collaborate with the relevant internal Railpen teams to enhance the execution outcome for our client.

This role is classified as a ‘Certified Person’ under the Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SMCR) and will therefore be subject to the additional requirements prescribed by the FCA.

The person

We are looking for an analytically minded trader with experience in electronic equity trading and a desire to develop within a multi-asset trading desk environment. Beyond execution expertise, we are seeking someone with a genuine curiosity for markets and data, someone who enjoys spending time digging into the detail to identify issues and areas for improvement. The successful candidate will possess an inquisitive mindset, a commitment to continuous learning, and a strong interest in coding, data analytics, macroeconomics and market structure. Effective communication skills and strong attention to detail are essential.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • 3-7 years' trading experience on a buy-side or sell-side trading desk.
  • Experience trading equities using algorithms.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, SQL or VBA), ability to analyse large datasets and use APIs.
  • Demonstrated interest in technology, data analytics and process improvement.
  • Self-motivated with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Degree educated and IMC qualified (or equivalent).

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Exposure to additional asset classes including Rates, FX, Derivatives (Futures, Commodities, Options), ETFs, Credit.
  • Ability to engage effectively with portfolio managers across equity and macro strategies.
