We have an exciting opportunity for a Frontend Developer to join our Web Team on a permanent basis, based in Darlington (hybrid working).
Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme—one of the UK’s largest and longest‑established pension funds. Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members. We take a holistic approach, focusing on how we support members today and how we can positively impact the communities and the world they will retire into.
The role involves designing, building, and optimising intuitive, high‑performance user interfaces across our digital products. Your work will directly enhance how our members self‑serve and manage their pension accounts, ensuring a seamless, accessible and user‑focused experience. You will work closely with designers, backend developers and product owners to deliver new features and enhancements. Responsibilities include developing responsive and accessible interfaces, writing clean and secure code, and contributing throughout the delivery lifecycle—from development and testing through to deployment and BAU improvements. You will also participate in code reviews, support strategic technical decisions, and ensure our applications meet modern standards for usability, security, and performance.
This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of modern Microsoft aligned development practices, including experience with Microsoft Visual Studio, C#, the .NET framework, and the MVC architectural pattern. You should be comfortable working within a Microsoft centric development environment, using Visual Studio to build and debug applications, writing clean and maintainable C# code, and understanding how frontend components interact with .NET based backend services. Familiarity with MVC principles such as separating concerns, working with controllers, views, and models, and structuring applications for scalability and maintainability will be highly valuable. You will also bring an understanding of responsive design, cross‑browser compatibility, and secure development practices, along with the ability to debug, troubleshoot and optimise complex interfaces. Experience working with content management systems (CMS platforms) is important, enabling you to build, update and maintain content‑driven digital experiences in a structured, scalable way. Experience with agile delivery, user‑centred design principles, and creating clear documentation is essential. You will thrive in a collaborative, cross‑functional team environment, be an effective communicator, able to explain technical concepts in a clear, accessible way, and comfortable presenting new features to stakeholders. Attention to detail, problem‑solving capability and a passion for creating exceptional user experiences are essential.
Our values of integrity, community and alignment guide how we work. You will actively demonstrate these values—helping create a safe environment, putting community needs above ego, and aligning decisions to the best interests of our members.
