Who we are

Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds. Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members. Railpen takes a holistic view, focusing on how we serve members today and how we can positively impact the communities and the world they will retire into. Our values of integrity, community and alignment are the guiding principles that influence our behaviour. They help us make decisions and shape our interactions with others. They’re what we stand for.

The role

As an Investment Tax Manager, the role is to support the Head of Investment Tax and Investment Tax Senior Manager with ensuring that the tax filing obligations of the investment structures are met in a timely and efficient manner. This includes, but is not limited to preparing and submitting CIS returns monthly, supporting the preparation, review and submission of VAT returns and managing the corporation and partnership tax return submissions. The role also involves supporting with adhoc tax queries that arise from the business, and overseeing the performance of third-party service providers as appropriate.

The person

We are looking for someone who has a high level of experience working across different types of tax, including Corporate Tax. You will have the ability to efficiently review and produce relevant reports and be comfortable managing tax compliance and owning the tax relocation process within Railpen. The successful candidate will either be tax qualified (ATT or CTA) or a qualified accountant who has a proficiency in Microsoft Excel. A previous experience of using Alpha Tax for corporation tax compliance purposes, as well as having exposure to how real estate and infrastructure assets are taxed would be desirable. In addition, some background within VAT would be a distinct advantage, however this isn’t essential. To succeed in this role, you will have excellent attention to detail and be able to prioritise workload to meet the various deadlines. You will be expected to take ownership of end-to-end compliance delivery, provide technical direction and review, and manage inputs from internal stakeholders and external advisors. You should be an excellent communicator, with the ability to articulate financial information in both technical and non-technical terms to the diverse stakeholders you’ll be collaborating with. We are looking for an individual who is self-directed and can take ownership of tasks. The role will be expansive, and we therefore require someone who has a willingness to step out of their comfort zone and broaden their existing tax knowledge.

What we can offer you

  • A competitive salary (depending on experience)
  • 28 day annual leave plus bank holidays
