RSSB is seeking a Lead Rolling Stock Systems Engineer to join our Rolling Stock Standards Team. The team produces and maintains the technical content of standards, supports the research and development programme with expert knowledge, and provides specialist advice within RSSB and for our members.
As our Lead Rolling Stock Systems Engineer, you’ll work at the interface between engineering expertise, industry collaboration and standards development, shaping the technical framework for rolling stock while supporting research, innovation and informed decision‑making across the GB rail industry. This is a permanent role based at our Fenchurch Avenue offices in London on a hybrid basis.

Responsibilities- Work with Technical Specialists to develop the technical content of standards related to rolling stock for the benefit of the rail industry in terms of safety, performance and cost effectiveness, applying principles concerning existing and emerging technology.
- Draft proposed content of standards and related material in collaboration with industry stakeholders so that they achieve their intended purpose and provide the expected benefit, respond to consultation comments, seek agreement from those commenting, ensure project schedules are adhered to, identify and mitigate risks, and support progress reporting and policy decisions.
- Act as a key contact for rolling stock engineering, research and other technical/specialist areas as required, providing expertise in clear, concise verbal and written form suitable for the target audience.
- Represent the interests of the GB rail industry as a delegated representative of the Professional Head of Rolling Stock, including GB standards committees and system interface committees, European and international standards committees and their GB 'mirror' working groups, to ensure that the GB stakeholders’ collective position is represented and communicated.
- Present relevant material, including proposals, draft standards and related documentation; occasional UK and overseas travel may be required.
- Undertake technical reviews of standards documents and proposals for standards change relating to rolling stock and contribute to the assessment of predicted impacts of proposals and review documents.
- Develop, manage and maintain effective relationships across RSSB and in relevant stakeholder, industry, government, regulatory and academic bodies at all levels, to enable the effective production and maintenance of standards, technical assurance matters and rolling stock engineering in general, ensuring stakeholders are satisfied with the support for rolling stock systems.
- Maintain awareness of potential technical developments and learn from experience and accident investigations across technical assurance and rolling stock engineering, communicating within RSSB to enable strategic influence for the best interest of the GB network.
- Consider and propose potential commercial opportunities for RSSB resulting from member engagements and other routine activities.
- Proactively support RSSB’s safety analysis, research and development projects through the application of rolling stock systems expertise.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
- Qualified to (or working towards) Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer status, or equivalent.
- A member of a recognised professional institution (e.g. IET, IMechE).
- Broad understanding of rolling stock function use and maintenance.
- IT literate, including with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to communicate accurately, clearly, concisely, articulately and constructively in written and spoken word.
- Ability to work collaboratively, network and influence at all levels, building wide and effective networks of contacts inside and outside the organisation.

- Detailed knowledge of some rolling stock manufacture or maintenance practices across mainline passenger, freight and metro applications (desirable).
- Understanding of the interfaces between rolling stock, infrastructure and power supply systems (desirable).
- Good working knowledge of the principles of safety management (desirable).
- Understanding of the role and purpose of different types of standards, for example Railway Group Standards (RGS), Rail Industry Standards (RIS), National Technical Specification Notices (NTSN), Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI), European standards (EN) developed by CEN/CENELEC, and international standards developed by the ISO and IEC (desirable).
