Principal Lawyer – Property, Planning & Regeneration
We are looking for a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (or equivalent) to join the Council’s legal department as a Principal Lawyer. The role is based in South London and will involve working in a hybrid working environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of staff and a busy, challenging caseload in planning and property matters.
- Lead, direct, develop and improve the service delivered to operational teams in planning & highways and property, ensuring an excellent standard of service and value for money.
- Maintain quality assurance and performance standards for the service provided by the team.
- Build and sustain positive working relationships with third‑party providers who handle outsourced property and complex planning work.
- Collaborate with the new Assistant Director of Legal Services on corporate activities and transformation initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Qualified solicitor, barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (or equivalent relevant qualification).
- Good experience in planning or property work, preferably within the public sector.
- Strong organisational and time‑management skills, able to work under pressure and meet competing deadlines.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Benefits
- Competitive salary band (PO9): starting at £78,266, rising annually to £88,090, inclusive of market supplement up to £10,000 and a welcome payment of £5,000 (where applicable).
