We are looking for a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (or equivalent) to join the Council’s legal department as a Principal Lawyer. The role is based in South London and will involve working in a hybrid working environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of staff and a busy, challenging caseload in planning and property matters.
  • Lead, direct, develop and improve the service delivered to operational teams in planning & highways and property, ensuring an excellent standard of service and value for money.
  • Maintain quality assurance and performance standards for the service provided by the team.
  • Build and sustain positive working relationships with third‑party providers who handle outsourced property and complex planning work.
  • Collaborate with the new Assistant Director of Legal Services on corporate activities and transformation initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (or equivalent relevant qualification).
  • Good experience in planning or property work, preferably within the public sector.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills, able to work under pressure and meet competing deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary band (PO9): starting at £78,266, rising annually to £88,090, inclusive of market supplement up to £10,000 and a welcome payment of £5,000 (where applicable).
