Location:
Aberdeen, Scotland

Department:
Biology R&D

Reports To:
Head of Biology / CSO

Type:
Full-Time

About Us:

We are a privately backed biotech startup pioneering novel therapeutics for metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and obesity. Our mission is to translate cutting-edge science into transformative treatments. As part of our growing team, you\'ll have the opportunity to shape assay platforms from the ground up and contribute directly to our discovery pipeline.

Role Overview:

We\'re looking for a hands-on, creative
Assay Development Biologist
to lead the design, optimisation, validation and implementation of
in vitro
assays that support target discovery, compound screening, and mechanism-of-action studies. You\'ll work closely with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where your contributions will have immediate impact.

Key Responsibilities:

Assay Innovation & Development

  • Design and optimise cell-based and biochemical assays (e.g., ELISA, qPCR, reporter assays, enzyme activity) tailored to metabolic disease biology.
  • Utilize these assays for screening of compounds developed by the company chemistry team
  • Develop and implement scalable assay formats for screening and profiling candidate molecules.

Model Systems

  • Establish and maintain disease-relevant cell models (e.g., hepatocytes, adipocytes, neuroblast cells).
  • Implement metabolic stress and signalling pathway assays (e.g., leptin and insulin signalling).

Data & Analysis

  • Analyse assay data using statistical tools (GraphPad Prism, SPSS and Excel preferred).
  • Maintain meticulous records and contribute to data packages for investors and regulatory filings.

Startup Collaboration

  • Work closely with chemistry, computational, and translational teams.
  • Work directly with CSO on scientific priorities
  • Participate in strategic discussions and contribute to IP generation.

Qualifications:

  • PhD or MSc in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience and/or training in assay development, ideally in metabolic disease or related therapeutic areas.
  • Strong foundation in cell culture, molecular biology, and assay troubleshooting.
  • Experience in startup or entrepreneurial settings is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with assessment of metabolic signaling pathways
  • Experience with cloning and bacterial culture.
  • Comfort with flexible roles and wearing multiple hats in a startup environment.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary.
  • A dynamic, mission-driven team with a flat structure.
  • Direct impact on therapeutic development and company growth.
