Position: Waste & Recycling Operative

Location: Halton Borough Council

Division: Environment Services – Waste & Recycling

Key Responsibilities

As part of the Waste & Recycling team, you will:

*

Collect domestic and commercial refuse safely, efficiently, and in line with council procedures.

*

Complete all tasks assigned daily by the Driver/Chargehand, Supervisor, or Manager.

*

Safely operate bin-lifting equipment and follow health & safety procedures at all times.

*

Return bins and containers to designated points after collection.

*

Deliver replacement refuse sacks and secure bin cupboards/doors where required.

*

Clean spillages encountered during collection rounds.

*

Act as a banksman to guide the vehicle safely in tight or reversing situations.

*

Wear the required uniform and PPE at all times.

*

Report accidents, hazards, damaged bins, or missed collections promptly.

*

Ensure collections follow scheduled routes, including around bank holidays.

*

Communicate courteously with members of the public.

*

Support training of new staff when required.

*

Carry out any other duties consistent with the role.

Candidate Requirements

Essential:

*

Full, clean valid driving licence

*

Experience working in waste-related activities

*

Good understanding of English (written & verbal)

*

Ability to communicate clearly and courteously

*

Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

*

Physically fit to lift up to 25kg and handle demanding tasks

*

Able to work independently and as part of a team

*

Able to follow written instructions

*

Health & Safety awareness

*

Good interpersonal and customer-facing skills

*

Willing to work flexible patterns

Desirable:

*

Relevant Health & Safety training

*

Additional experience in waste/recycling services
