RAD is looking for an engineer to lead the development and delivery of its advanced battery products. Taking responsibility for all aspects of battery supply from specification, procurement, storage, shipping, installation, charging systems, service, support, lifecycle and eventually disposal, the role will span many disciplines from electrical and mechanical engineering to project management and production planning.

Working closely with our suppliers, the engineer will define the requirements for our range of high and low Voltage batteries to complement our propulsion products. As our product range grows, so too will the battery requirements and production volumes.

Keeping up to date with the latest battery technology to ensure RAD’s offering remains current and cost effective, the lead engineer will ensure that supply matches demand, in volumes, quality, reliability and standards compliance, specifically for marine applications.

The role will involve interacting with new customers to predict performance and help plan installations including production of wiring, charging and cooling system schematics along with installation and maintenance guides. The aim is to minimise the amount of customer support required through simple installation, high reliability, and comprehensive and user-friendly documentation but it is inevitable that new products will require a degree of support which will be overseen by the Battery Engineering Lead.

The role combines deep technical ownership of the electrical design with effective product management to deliver market leading marine electrification.

Summary of Key Responsibilities
  • Development and delivery of RAD’s battery and power system product range including High Voltage batteries, chargers, DCDCs, cabling and cooling systems
  • Management of supply chain, maintaining reliable supply matched to demand
  • Oversight of quality assurance and standards compliance including shipping regulations
  • Ownership of customer support activities in connection with the battery and power systems including initial system integration and installation
  • Production of drawings, schematics, user guides and service manuals as required for customer integration
  • Keeping up to date with new and upcoming battery and power technologies to maintain RAD’s position in the market as a leading supplier of cutting-edge products
Skills & Experience
  • Experience developing HV and LV electrical systems or battery packs
  • Good knowledge of HV system design including over current protection, insulation resistance monitoring, pre-charge systems and safety interlocks
  • Understanding of EMC, cable shielding and equipotential bonding
  • Good technical knowledge of HV battery charging, including standards such as CCS and understanding of charge profiles and communication protocols
  • Familiarity with battery compliance standards such as UN38.3, IEC62619 and preferably some familiarity with commercial marine standards such as Workboat Code 3
